8'2" x 10'2" Sino Tabriz Wool & Silk Rug | Ivory Bird and Floral Medallion | Never Used
This is a high end Sino Tabriz, hand-knotted in wool with silk accents on a cotton foundation, and it is the kind of weave that rewards close inspection. The field is ivory, the drawing is fully curvilinear, and the pile has been clipped low so that every stem, petal and bird outline stays sharp. It has never been on a floor. At 8'2" x 10'2" it sits squarely in the most useful 8x10 area rug size, large enough to carry a full seating group without swallowing a room. As with every hand-knotted Oriental rug we sell, it ships with a certificate of authenticity documenting the size, materials, weave and origin.
Design and Motifs
The layout follows the classic Tabriz formula: a lobed central medallion with paired finials, 4 large corner spandrels, and a field of flowering vine that fills every remaining inch of ivory. Look closely at the field and it turns into a garden with wildlife in it. Small birds stand on the vine scrolls, tail feathers picked out in coral, teal and slate, and in the spandrels a second pair of birds hides among the split leaves. Rounded palmettes, multi petal rosettes, tulips and rose sprays are drawn with the curved line that only a tight weave allows, and the leaves carry dark outlines that keep the pattern legible from standing height. The main border runs a chain of ivory cartouches, each holding its own rose spray, separated by flowering vine, with narrow floral guard stripes on either side. It is a busy design executed with discipline: nothing is crowded, and the 4 corners resolve cleanly.
A Palette of Ivory, Lavender, Rose and Sage
The ground is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than to stark white, and it is the reason the rug reads as light in a room. Against it the designer has worked a soft mauve lavender through the medallion, the spandrels and the main border, a tone that shifts toward dusty rose or pale taupe depending on the light and the direction of the pile. The flowers bring the accents: rose pink and a deeper coral red in the blossoms, sage and pine green in the leaves and leaf tips, powder blue and teal in the small rosettes and bird wings, with charcoal and dark brown reserved for outlines and the curling arabesque leaves. The silk sits where the light needs to catch, in the petals and the vine, so the whole surface has a low sheen rather than a hard shine. The overall effect is pastel and calm, and it works comfortably with cream, gray, walnut and blush interiors.
Sino Tabriz Weaving: Made in China to Tabriz Drawing
Sino Tabriz is the name given to Chinese workshop weaving that follows the drawing tradition of Tabriz, and the better examples, like this one, are made for export at a knot count high enough to hold a curved line. The back photo tells the story: the knots are small and even, the rows are straight, and the cotton warps carry an ivory hand-tied fringe finished with a flat woven end. That density is what allows the low clipped pile, and the low pile in turn is what makes the birds and the fine floral detail readable. Wool supplies the body and the wear resistance, while the silk is used sparingly as highlight rather than as a whole field, which is the sensible way to build a rug meant to live under furniture. It has never been used, so the pile is full, the colors are at their strongest, and the edges and fringe are exactly as they left the loom.
