10'2" x 14'7" Wool and Silk Oriental Rug | Tabriz Floral Medallion Design | Ivory & Black, Never Used

This is a large, formal, hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in a wool and silk mix on a cotton foundation, drawn in the classic Tabriz medallion manner and made in China by a workshop that weaves to that curvilinear standard. At 10'2" x 14'7" it covers a full formal room without crowding it, and it sits comfortably in the 10x14 room size range that most dining rooms and great rooms are planned around. The pile is dense and evenly clipped, the silk is used deliberately on outlines and flower centers so the drawing catches light rather than the whole surface shining, and the rug has never been on a floor. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is a genuine hand-knotted piece.

Design and Motifs

The layout is the textbook Tabriz formula executed with unusual patience. A lobed black medallion sits dead center, its outline built from scrolling arabesque leaves and curled vine tips rather than a plain silhouette, and it opens into a soft interior filled with an 8 petal rosette and small paired leaves. Slender pendant finials run off the medallion at top and bottom, and matching black cartouches anchor the 4 corners of the field as spandrels. Everything between is an all-over vine field: thin brown stems looping in long arcs, rose sprays, buds, small palmettes and split leaves, spaced so the ivory ground still reads as open. The main border is a wide black band carrying alternating rose bouquets and serrated leaves, framed by beige guard stripes of small rosettes and a fine pink outline that keeps the whole frame crisp against the field.

Color Palette

The field is a warm ivory, closer to cream than to stark white, and it shifts toward a soft beige and camel tone where the large scrolling leaf cartouches fill the outer field and spandrels. Against that, the black of the medallion and the main border is dense and matte, which is what gives the rug its graphic punch from across a room. The floral work carries the color: deep maroon and wine rose heads, light pink and blush petals, olive and sage green leaves, ochre and old gold vine tips, with tiny pale blue and ivory dots used as flower centers. The medallion interior is the softest note in the rug, a pale peach beige holding a green gold rosette at the very center. It is a light, warm, low contrast rug overall, punctuated by black, and it works with cream, walnut, brass and muted greens.

Origin and Weaving Quality

The Tabriz design is one of the most copied formal layouts in the world precisely because it is the hardest to draw well: the curved line has to stay smooth through the medallion outline and the vine scrolls, and that only happens at a high knot count with a skilled cartoon. This piece was hand-knotted in China, where workshops built their reputation on exactly this kind of fine, tightly clipped, wool and silk floral weaving for the export market. The back shown in the photographs is even and finely gridded, the knots are small and regular, the selvedges are tight and the fringe is a clean continuation of the cotton warp. The silk is worked into outlines, petals and the medallion interior, so the pattern lifts and changes as you walk around it, while the wool ground keeps the surface durable enough for a real dining room or living room floor.
