This is a room-filling 12' x 15' hand-knotted rug in a classic Tabriz drawing, woven in China with a wool pile carrying silk highlights over a cotton foundation. Design and Motifs

The layout follows the workshop Tabriz formula: a large black-ground medallion set dead center, ringed by 16 lobed ivory and sage cartouches that radiate outward like petals, with a finely drawn 8 petal rosette at the very heart. From that center the red field breaks into a dense curvilinear all over of vine scroll, palmettes, feathered leaves and small star rosettes, drawn with the thin flowing line that this design depends on. Two shield-shaped pendants sit above and below the medallion on the long axis, and the 4 corners are filled with large ivory spandrels that carry their own scrolling vinework and small black cloud-band reserves. The border system is a wide black main band of connected palmettes and rosettes framed by ivory guard stripes of running floral meander, then finished with a narrow red outer stripe and ivory fringe at both ends.

Color

The field is a deep wine red that reads slightly cooler and more burgundy in the close-up photographs and warmer under showroom light, which is normal for a red this saturated. Against it, the drawing is worked in ivory, cream and a soft oyster beige, with the silk highlights catching light along the leaves and petal edges so the flowers appear to lift off the ground. The medallion interior is a true black, which makes the ivory center rosette look almost lit from behind, and the same black returns in the main border and in the small corner reserves to tie the frame back to the middle. Scattered through the florals are muted salmon pink, dusty rose and a pale sage green, plus occasional flecks of slate blue in the smaller blossoms. It is a red rug that stays formal rather than loud, because the ivory spandrels and ivory guard stripes give the eye a place to rest at the edges.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This piece is honestly a Chinese weave, not a Tabriz weave: it was made in China to the Tabriz cartoon, and it belongs in the broader family of the hand-knotted Oriental rug rather than in any Persian city group. The workshops that produce this grade work from the same detailed graph paper cartoons used in the classic curvilinear tradition, and the knot count here is high enough to hold the fine vine line and the small floral heads without the drawing going blocky, which is the whole test of a Tabriz medallion design at 12 feet wide. The wool is well spun with a good clip and a clean sheen, the silk is used sparingly as highlight rather than as a gimmick, and the back shows straight, regular rows with firm selvages and even tension corner to corner, so the rug lies flat without buckling in a room this size.
