Design and Motifs

The center is a multi-lobed medallion built in rings: an ivory 8 petal rosette at the core, a sage green cartouche band around it, then a burgundy field carrying paired cloud bands and pale pink roses, finished with a scalloped outline and a slender pendant at each end. The black field around it is not left open for a second: it is filled with a continuous lattice of curved vine, small palmettes, lotus heads, buds and tiny star flowers, all drawn in the flowing curvilinear manner the Tabriz workshops made famous. Burgundy spandrels anchor the 4 corners, each one holding a large leaf palmette and a spray of roses. The main border runs an ivory ground with alternating green and burgundy cartouches, black rosette medallions and turtle-palmette forms, framed by narrow guard stripes. A Black Field with Ivory, Burgundy and Green

Black is the engine of this color scheme. Because the ground is that deep, every small flower head reads as a point of light: cream and ivory blossoms, dusty rose and salmon pink roses, soft gold and saffron centers, and a muted sage to forest green in the leaves and vine work. The burgundy is a deep wine rather than a bright red, and it appears three times, in the medallion ring, in the corner spandrels and inside the border cartouches, which ties the composition together. The ivory main border and the ivory cotton fringe keep the perimeter bright so the rug does not feel heavy in a room with dark furniture. Where the silk is used, mostly in the medallion outlines and the finer flower detail, the color shifts as the light moves across it, one shade in daylight from a window and another under lamps in the evening.
