7'9" x 9'9" Sino Tabriz Rug | Black Floral Medallion | Wool & Silk Pile, Never Used
Laid flat, this 7'9" x 9'9" Sino Tabriz rug reads as one deep black field carrying a full floral cartoon from edge to edge, closed in by a wide ivory border. The pile is wool with silk worked into the medallion, the flower heads and the leaf tips, and that silk is what makes the center of the rug sit a shade brighter than everything around it as you walk past. It is brand new and never used, a clean room-size choice for a buyer shopping 8x10 area rugs who wants the formal drawing of an Oriental rug without paying antique money for it. It ships with our certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The center holds a round ivory medallion built around an 8 petal rosette, with fine black outlining inside it that keeps the small flowers legible. Around that disc sit 8 burgundy lobes, alternating large and small, each filled with pale scrollwork, and above and below them a pointed ivory pendant reaches out into the field. The rest of the ground is an all-over pattern of palmettes, open roses, tulips and serrated leaves riding scrolling vines, drawn symmetrically about both axes so the design mirrors top to bottom and side to side. Soft camel spandrels fill the 4 corners of the field with their own vine and cloudband work, each pinned by a small burgundy square. The main border is an ivory band of alternating palmettes and rosettes linked by a thin vine, flanked by narrow burgundy guard stripes and outer camel bands, with a plain black outer edge finishing the whole piece.
A Black Field Framed in Ivory and Burgundy
The field is a true black, dense and even, with no abrash and no fading, which is what lets the lighter colors read so cleanly on top of it. The flower heads run through cream, ivory, peach and a dusty salmon, with tan and pale gold on the larger palmettes, so the overall impression of the field is warm rather than stark. Burgundy is used with restraint, on the medallion lobes, on the guard stripes and in small accents scattered through the field. Green shows only in the leaf work, a muted sage moving toward olive, and there are flecks of pale grey-blue and chalk white in the smaller blossoms. The border shifts the palette lighter, an ivory ground with camel shading in the corner panels, so the rug ends bright at its edges and pulls the eye back toward the black center. The cotton fringe is natural ivory and the selvage is black.
Sino Tabriz Weaving and Quality
Sino Tabriz is the workshop name for pieces woven in China to the Tabriz drawing tradition, and the good ones, like this rug, are judged on the same things: how tightly the curved line holds, how small the flower heads can be drawn before they blur, and how evenly the pile is clipped. The close photograph with the ruler shows a fine, regular knot across a cotton foundation, a low clipped pile that keeps every outline sharp, and a tidy black selvage. Wool carries the body of the pattern and silk is reserved for highlights, which is the standard way this quality of rug is built and the reason the medallion changes tone as light moves across it. Among hand-knotted Oriental rugs in this size, a black ground with this much fine floral drawing is far less common than the usual red or ivory field, and it is a genuinely useful piece for a room where the furniture is light.
