9'9" x 13'9" Sino Tabriz Rug | Black Floral Medallion Field | Wool and Silk Pile, Brand New
This is a Sino Tabriz, hand-knotted in China on a cotton foundation in wool with silk drawn through the flowers, and it follows the Tabriz workshop formula closely: one lobed medallion, ivory corner spandrels, and a field packed edge to edge with scrolling vinework. It has never been on a floor, so the pile still stands at full height and the silk holds its original sheen, which you can see in the raking light of the rolled-edge photograph. At 9'9" x 13'9" it covers a full room and floats all the seating in a large living room or seats a 10 seat dining table with chairs pulled back, which puts it squarely in the 10x14 Oriental rugs group. Every rug ships with our certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and measurements.
Design and Motifs
The center is a round ivory medallion built around an 8 petal rosette, ringed by burgundy cloud lobes and pale curling cloudband scrolls, with a slender floral pendant reaching toward each end of the field. Around it the black ground carries a continuous all-over system of palmettes, open rosettes, carnation heads and serrated leaves on thin vines, mirrored on both axes so the drawing reads as one connected garden rather than repeated blocks. The 4 corners are resolved with large ivory spandrels that repeat the medallion palette, a device that makes the field read as an oval within a rectangle. The border system runs 3 bands deep: a wide ivory main border of meandering vine with alternating palmettes and cypress-like flower sprays, a burgundy guard stripe on each side set with small rosettes and black-centered blossoms, and a narrow ivory minor stripe, all finished with a plain black outer edge and natural cotton fringe. It is a formal, drawing-led design of the kind collectors expect from an Oriental rug in the Tabriz manner.
Black Field, Ivory Border and Burgundy Accents
The field is a deep, even black, the kind that reads as a solid dark ground from across the room and only reveals its detail up close. Against it, warm ivory and cream do the heavy lifting: the main border, the spandrels and the medallion core are all worked in a soft buttery ivory that shifts toward sand where the silk catches light. Burgundy is the second voice, used for the medallion lobes, the guard stripes and scattered cartouche shapes in the field, a true wine red rather than a bright tomato. Olive and sage green fill the leaves and calyxes, and the flower heads are picked out in apricot, salmon, rose pink and small touches of pale blue-grey and clean white, which is what keeps a dark rug from going heavy. Black and ivory is the easiest high-contrast pairing to decorate around: it sits well with walnut and mahogany furniture, with black lacquer and chrome, and with grey or ivory walls, and it hides everyday traffic far better than a light open field.
Sino Tabriz Origin and Weaving Quality
Sino Tabriz means exactly what it says: a Chinese workshop weaving the Tabriz cartoon, knot for knot, on a cotton warp and weft. Chinese ateliers took up this tradition in the late 20th century and became very good at it, and the best of them, as here, use a fine wool pile with silk reserved for outlining flower heads, vine tips and the medallion tracery so those elements lift off the ground when the light moves. The back photograph shows an even, tight knot line with no bulges or pulled selvedges, the pile is clipped low so the curved drawing stays crisp, and the ends are finished with hand-knotted cotton fringe. Buyers cross-shopping hand-knotted Oriental rugs at this size usually find the Sino Tabriz gives them classical Tabriz drawing and a genuine wool and silk pile at a fraction of what the same design costs from a top workshop, and because this one is brand new you get the full service life of the rug rather than someone else's remaining half.
