Ivory is the least forgiving ground a weaver can choose, because every knot is on show and nothing hides behind a dark field. This piece handles it: a clean cream ground carrying a fine curvilinear vine scroll, an 8 lobed centre medallion and pale light blue corner spandrels that frame the field without crowding it. The pile is wool with silk used for the outlines and the smaller flower heads, so the drawing lifts and catches light as you walk around it, most visibly in the close photographs of the medallion and the main border. It is knotted on a cotton foundation, it is brand new and never used, and at 9'9" x 13'9" it is a genuine room size piece that sits comfortably in the 10x14 Oriental rugs bracket. Design and Motifs

The layout follows the classic Tabriz formula: a central medallion with pendant finials at each end, 4 corner spandrels, and a field filled edge to edge with a thin scrolling vine that loops in large circles and throws off palmettes, split leaves, rosettes and small bud clusters. The medallion itself is built in concentric rings, a pale blue rosette core inside a gold cusped star, ringed by red and ivory petal work and then by a soft gold cartouche ring studded with tiny blossoms. The pendants above and below are drawn with rust and dark outlining that gives them real depth against the cream. The spandrels drop a serrated pale blue field behind curling arabesques and a single flowering spray at the point. The main border runs a beige to gold ground with alternating floral cartouches and bouquets of roses, carnations and star flowers, flanked by narrow sage green and gold guard stripes with a running rosette meander. It is a busy design drawn with restraint, so the field still reads calm from across the room.

The Ivory Field, Light Blue Spandrels and Soft Gold Borders

The ground is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than to bright white, with a faint honey cast where the silk sits in the vine work. Against that, the spandrels read as a chalky light blue, muted rather than icy, and the same blue reappears in small star flowers scattered through the field and border. The borders shift the palette warmer: a sand to soft gold main band, sage and celadon green guard stripes, and an outer ivory band that carries the eye back out to the cotton fringe. The flowers supply the colour, salmon and dusty pink roses, deep wine red centres, apricot and gold petals, olive and moss green foliage, with fine brown and near black outlining that keeps every motif crisp. There is almost no saturated primary anywhere, which is why this one sits so easily with pale plaster walls, oak floors, warm greys and cream upholstery. It brightens a room instead of anchoring it in dark colour.

Made in China: Weaving Quality and the Tabriz Tradition

This is honest workshop production out of China, woven in the Tabriz design tradition that Chinese ateliers adopted decades ago and now execute at a high level. The back photograph shows an even, tight knot line with the pattern fully legible from the reverse, straight selvedges and a level handle with no pull or wave in the sides, which is the plain evidence of a well managed loom rather than a rushed one. Wool carries the field and the pile, silk is reserved for outlines, tendrils and the small flower heads where the sheen does the most work, and the clipping is low enough to keep the fine drawing sharp without stripping the wool of body. As an Oriental rug in a neutral palette and a true 10x14 footprint, it is the practical answer for a large formal room where a dark antique would close the space down.
