This piece sits squarely in the most useful room size we sell, one of the 10 x 14 area rugs that will float a full sofa group or seat a 10 chair table without the back legs ever hunting for the edge. The ivory ground reads calm and almost plain from a standing height, then resolves into hundreds of small drawn flowers as you walk onto it. Wool carries the field and silk is worked into the flower heads and leaf tips, so the blossoms flash a half tone brighter than the ground when the light moves across them. It is brand new and never used: full pile, straight sides, even selvedges and clean hand-tied fringe at both ends, as the corner and back photos show. A signed certificate of authenticity ships with the rug.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The weaver used the all over Tabriz drawing instead: a mirrored lattice of thin curving vines that repeats top to bottom and left to right, hung with large palmettes, open roses, lotus heads, small 8 petal rosettes and long curled leaves. Two small upright cypress-like sprays mark the vertical axis, one toward each end, which is the only hint of a center point. The main border runs a chain of big fan-shaped palmette bouquets alternating with rounded floral cartouches on a camel ground, and it is framed by 4 narrow guard stripes, the inner pair filled with tiny maroon 4 petal blossoms and stepped green leaves. Corners are properly resolved rather than cut off mid motif, which is the first thing to check on an all over layout at this scale.

Ivory Ground With a Soft Accent Palette

The field is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than to white, and it takes up most of the surface area, which is why the rug lightens a room rather than anchoring it dark. The main border shifts to a soft camel beige, one step warmer than the field, so the frame separates without a hard line. Accents are deliberately muted: dusty rose and salmon pink in the rose heads, lavender and mauve in the larger blooms, olive and deep forest green in the leaves, warm apricot and rust in the palmettes, and small hits of deep maroon in the guard borders and flower centers that do the work of a punctuation mark. Brown outlines every vine and keeps the drawing legible against the pale ground, with occasional slate blue-grey and chalk white buds scattered through the field for depth.

Made in China, Woven to the Tabriz Drawing Tradition

This rug was hand-knotted in China, where the best workshops built their reputation by reproducing the classical Tabriz cartoon at a genuinely fine knot count and finishing the pile short so the curved line stays sharp. That is exactly what you see in the close-ups: thin vine stems held to a single row of knots, petal shading in 3 and 4 tones, and a back with small, tight, regular knotting on a cotton foundation. It is a true hand-knotted Oriental rug, not a tufted or machine piece, and the wool and silk blend gives it the light play of a much more expensive weave in a size that most collections cannot fill cheaply.
