7'10" x 9'9" Tabriz Design Oriental Rug | Ivory Wool and Silk Medallion | Brand New

This 7'10" x 9'9" piece is a hand-knotted wool and silk reading of the classic Tabriz medallion layout, made in China and finished to a standard that holds up under a magnifying glass. The ivory field is covered edge to edge with a fine scrolling vine, the center carries a burgundy 8 petal star medallion, and clipped silk sits in the rosette hearts and leaf tips so the drawing lifts and changes as you move past it. At 94 inches by 117 inches it is a genuine room size rug, the footprint most buyers are shopping when they look at 8x10 Oriental rugs, and it has never been walked on: the pile is full and even, the ivory fringe is clean at both ends, and the condition is honestly perfect. Every rug leaves our Freeport warehouse with a certificate of authenticity stating size, materials and origin. If you want to place where this weaving sits in the wider family, our guide on the difference between a Persian and an Oriental rug is worth 5 minutes before you buy.

Design and Motifs

The layout is the full classical formula and nothing is left half drawn. A burgundy 8 point star medallion sits dead center, filled with a tiered rosette core, small curling cloud bands and pairs of gold blossoms, and it is outlined in a dotted ivory pearl line that reads like piping. Lance shaped pendants drop from the top and bottom of the medallion into the field. Around all of it runs a dense all over vine of carnations, lotus palmettes, tulips and tiny serrated leaves, so fine that the field never goes flat or empty. The 4 corners carry large camel spandrels loaded with big curled boteh paisleys and leafy arabesques, and the spandrel edges are cut in a scalloped line rather than a plain diagonal. The border system is 3 bands: a narrow floral guard, a wide burgundy and camel main border alternating shield shaped palmette cartouches with 8 petal ivory rosettes, and an outer guard of small running blossoms. Detail photo 4 shows how cleanly the medallion curves resolve, which is the test for this kind of drawing.

Color: Ivory Ground with Burgundy, Camel and Gold

The ground is a warm ivory, closer to soft cream than to white, and it is the reason the rug lights up a room instead of weighing it down. Against that sit 2 anchor tones: a deep burgundy, almost oxblood, in the medallion ground and the main border ground, and a soft camel to salmon brown in the spandrels and the central border band. The flowers inside the pattern bring the secondary palette, old gold and apricot in the rosettes, pale peach in the smaller blossoms, and muted sage to olive green in the leaves and stems. Slate blue and charcoal appear in the tiniest flower centers and leaf outlines, used as drawing lines rather than as color blocks. Brown runs through the vine work and keeps the whole field tied to the border. The silk highlights read as a lighter sheen inside the gold and peach flowers, which is why the same rug looks softer in the angled showroom shot and crisper in the straight overhead shot. Please note that the first overhead photograph reads a touch pinker than the rug in person; photos 2 through 5 are the truer color.

Woven in China in the Tabriz Tradition

This is an honest Chinese weaving of a Tabriz medallion design, and we price and describe it as exactly that, not as a Persian rug. Chinese workshops built their reputation on this category: cotton foundation, wool pile with real silk worked into the highlights, and a knot count fine enough to carry curved line floral drawing that a coarse village weave simply cannot hold. The back photograph with the ruler shows what matters here, tight even rows, a straight firm selvage, and no pulling or distortion in the 7'10" x 9'9" rectangle, which is why the rug lies flat the moment it comes off the roll. The wool has a quiet luster rather than a shine, the silk accents are clipped slightly lower so they catch light at an angle, and the pile depth is consistent from border to border. For a buyer who wants the look of a fine classical medallion rug at a fraction of the cost of an equivalent workshop piece, this is the practical answer, and it has never been used.
