7'10" x 9'6" Wool and Silk Oriental Rug | Tabriz Floral Medallion Design | Brand New

Hand-knotted in a wool pile carried on a cotton foundation, with silk worked into the flower heads and the scrollwork, this 7'10" x 9'6" rug reads as a light, formal floral piece rather than a heavy traditional one. It has never been used, the pile stands full and even across the whole field, and the fringe is still crisp on both ends. The weave is fine enough to draw individual rose petals at a small scale, which is exactly what this drawing demands, and the low clipped pile keeps the pattern sharp. It falls into the practical 8x10 rug size that anchors a full sofa and chair grouping, and as with every piece we import it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug.

Design and Motifs

The layout is a classic Tabriz floral medallion. At the center sits a large oval medallion built from a double chestnut brown cartouche outline that loops into small hooks and curls, filled with open cabbage roses, 5 petal blossoms and tiny buds on thin green stems. Around it the ivory field is not covered with vine work but scattered with roughly 20 detached bouquets, each one a cluster of 3 to 5 roses with a sheaf of serrated leaves, arranged in mirrored ranks up the length of the rug. The 4 corners carry large quarter spandrels drawn in camel brown acanthus scroll, their inner edge outlined by a fine beaded line that frames the field like a cartouche. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a wide ivory main border with alternating urns, rose sprays and leafy palmettes, flanked on both sides by narrow zigzag meander stripes, then slim floral guard bands at the outer and inner edges. Nothing in the drawing is crowded, and the symmetry holds cleanly from end to end.

A Study in Ivory, Rose and Sage

The ground is a warm ivory that leans toward cream and soft beige depending on the light, with no sharp white anywhere, which is what keeps the piece calm. The flowers run through a full rose range: pale blush and salmon on the outer petals, dusty rose at the mid tone, and a deeper brick rose used sparingly at the heart of the larger blooms so each bouquet has a focal point. Leaves and stems are sage green shading into a darker olive, with thin near black outlines that give the foliage definition against the ivory. The medallion outline, the corner scrolls and the larger acanthus leaves are camel and chestnut brown, warming into a light toffee where the silk catches the light. Small touches of pale gold and butter yellow appear in the flower centers and along the border vases. The silk content shows itself when you walk around the rug: the scrollwork and petal highlights shift from matte to luminous as the angle changes. For rooms built around light neutrals it sits comfortably with other ivory and beige rugs, pulling in rose and green as accents instead of dominating the palette.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This piece is honestly made in China, woven in a workshop that specializes in the Tabriz floral medallion tradition and works it in a mixed wool and silk pile. The back shows a tight, regular knot grid with no pulled rows or slack areas, the selvedges are firmly overcast, and the fringe is hand-tied rather than machine finished, all of which you can see in the detail photographs alongside the ruler and the authentic hand-knotted tag. Fine floral drawing of this kind only works above a certain knot count, because a rose head drawn across too few knots turns into a blur, and here the petals, the leaf serrations and the hairline outlines all hold their shape. The wool is clipped low and dense, which is the right finish for a formal pattern and also makes the rug easy to live with under furniture. Condition is perfect and the rug is new, so the buyer gets the full pile height and the full life of the piece.
