A true circle is the hardest shape to knot, and this 8' x 8'2" round Oriental rug holds its shape cleanly from the ivory outer guard band all the way to the centre rosette. The pile is wool with silk drawn through the highlights, knotted on a cotton foundation, and the drawing is worked in the Tabriz medallion idiom: a black field packed with flowering vine, a burgundy main border, and an ivory star medallion at the heart of it. Design and Motifs

The layout works outward in rings, which is exactly what a round format demands. At the centre sits an ivory star rosette with radiating petals and a small gold and blue flowerhead at its core, set against a deep green ground and ringed by rose palmettes and yellow fan flowers. Around that, the black field carries a dense all over pattern of curved vine, serrated leaves, small rosettes and budding sprays, drawn so the repeat reads evenly in every direction rather than favouring one axis. Burgundy arabesque panels break the field at 4 points, each filled with its own cluster of blossoms, and a scalloped ivory line separates field from border. The main border is burgundy, filled with large pink rose bouquets, paisley boteh forms and green leafwork, punctuated by small black diamond cartouches holding single gold rosettes. A narrow black outline finishes the circumference, with the ivory fringe knotted in a tight braid behind it.

Black, Burgundy, Green and Ivory in Balance

The black field is a genuine deep black, not a washed charcoal, and it does the heavy lifting here: it pushes every flowerhead forward and makes the ivory medallion read almost like a lit disc from across the room. Against it the burgundy is a dark wine tone, warm rather than orange, used for the main border and the field panels so the two reds anchor the circle at its edge and its centre. Green appears in two weights, a dark bottle green in the medallion ground and leaf outlines, and a softer sage green in the border foliage. The ivory ranges from a clean cream in the guard band to a warmer buttery tone inside the medallion where the silk catches the light. Rose pink, soft gold and small touches of pale blue are scattered through the flowerheads, and those accents are what keep such a dark palette from feeling heavy.

Weaving Quality and Origin

This piece was hand-knotted in China, in a workshop weaving to the Tabriz design tradition, and the back photograph tells you most of what you need to know: small, regular knots in neat rows, a clear cotton warp and weft, and enough resolution to render curved vine and rounded rose petals without the drawing turning blocky. Round weaving is specialist work, because the weaver must add and drop warps continuously as the width changes and keep the tension identical across every row, or the finished rug will cup or sit oval on the floor. This one lies flat and reads as a true circle. The wool is springy with good lustre, the silk is used selectively in highlights rather than sprayed everywhere, and the selvedges are tightly overcast in black so the edge holds its shape.
