Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion. Instead the entire field carries an all over floral repeat: large radiating palmettes, multi petal rosettes, small 5 petal blossoms and curved serrated leaves, all linked by a thin dark vine that loops from one cluster to the next. The scale changes as the eye moves outward, with the boldest rose clusters at the center and finer blossoms toward the perimeter, which keeps a round format from looking busy. Framing it are 5 concentric bands: a narrow salmon vine stripe, a soft green scrolling guard, a wide black main border packed with lotus palmettes and roses, another salmon guard, and an outer red band carrying pale arabesque cartouches and leaf tips. The weave is fine enough to render curled petal edges and shaded flower hearts cleanly, which is the whole test of a curvilinear floral drawing at this level.

A Ruby Red Field Against Deep Black Borders

The field reads as a deep ruby red that shifts toward wine in shadow and warms toward garnet where the light hits the silk. Against it the flowers are worked in soft salmon, blush pink, ivory, antique gold and a muted sage green, with small notes of slate blue and dark burgundy in the flower centers. The main border is a genuine black, not a very dark navy, and that black is what gives the rug its contrast and its formality: the salmon and gold palmettes sitting on it look almost lit from within. Between the black and the red sit two pale salmon guard stripes outlined in fine indigo lines, a quiet transition that stops the two strong tones from colliding.
