Design and Motifs

The field is an all over floral lattice rather than a medallion layout, so the pattern reads correctly from every seat in the room, which is exactly what a round rug needs to do. Thin scrolling vines loop out from a single small rosette at the center and carry palmettes, lotus blossoms, open rosettes and tiny four petal flower heads across the whole circle, with slender serrated leaves filling the gaps. The drawing is curvilinear throughout, with no straight lines anywhere, and the weaver has kept the vine flowing cleanly around the curve instead of letting it break at the edge. The main border is a black ground band of alternating large palmette cartouches and round rosettes joined by a continuous vine, framed on both sides by narrow ivory and beige guard stripes carrying small repeating blossoms. A pomegranate red outer guard closes the composition just inside the ivory fringe.

The Color Palette

The ground is a deep pomegranate red that sits closer to wine and burgundy than to a bright scarlet, and it stays even across the full 8 feet with no abrash or streaking. Against it the floral work is worked in ivory, cream and warm beige, with soft blush pink at the heart of several of the larger rosettes and small touches of pale gold. Sage and olive green run through the leaves and stems, cool enough to keep the red from reading heavy, and small black flower heads are scattered through the field to tie the ground back to the border. That border is a near ebony black, the darkest note in the rug, which sharpens the outline of the circle and makes the cream palmettes look almost lit from behind. The silk is used selectively, in the petals and the vine highlights, so the shine moves as you change position rather than flattening the whole surface.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This piece was made in China, in a workshop weaving to the classical Tabriz drawing tradition rather than to a local Chinese design vocabulary, and it is honest about that. The knotting is fine and consistently packed, which is what allows the vine to curve smoothly and the small flower heads to hold their shape at this scale; a coarse weave simply cannot render this kind of detail. The round format is the harder part of the job. A weaver has to shorten and lengthen every row on the loom to build a true circle, keep the pattern registered as the width changes, and finish the perimeter so it lies flat, and the back of this rug shows that work was done properly, with a straight even edge finish and hand tied ivory fringe all the way around.
