A true 8' x 8' circle is a rare thing to find hand-knotted, and this one is drawn with the discipline of a workshop piece rather than a novelty shape. The pile is wool with silk worked into the flowers and scrollwork, so the surface changes as you walk around it: the roses catch light from one side and go matte from the other. Every knot is tied by hand on a cotton foundation, the ivory fringe is an extension of the warps rather than a sewn-on trim, and the back photographed against a ruler shows an even, tight row count with no machine regularity. As a hand-knotted Oriental rug, it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the weave, materials and origin. It has never been placed in a home.

Design and Motifs

The layout is a classical Tabriz floral, adapted so that it reads correctly from every angle in the round. At the center sits a small gold-ivory rosette cluster, ringed by a sage and taupe medallion of curling acanthus and open roses, then by a second wider ring of vine scroll that acts as an inner border. Beyond it the ivory field carries an all-over spray of naturalistic roses, buds, carnation heads and leafy stems, anchored at 4 points by large leaf-and-palmette cartouches that mark the compass positions. The outer border repeats that idea at full scale: a continuous garland of roses and serrated leaves interrupted by 4 large green cartouches, each filled with its own bouquet, with a narrow guard band of pearls and reciprocal cream scrollwork closing the circle. The curved drawing is the point here. Circular formats punish a bad cartoon, and on this rug the vines meet cleanly and the rings stay perfectly concentric.

Ivory, Sage Green and Burgundy Color Story

The ground is a warm ivory that leans toward cream and light gold under lamplight, which is what keeps the whole rug soft rather than stark. Over it the flowers run through a rose family: salmon pink, dusty coral, terracotta and a deep burgundy used only in the smallest bud centers, so the darkest note never dominates. Foliage is a muted sage green with olive and pale celadon shading, and the medallion and cartouches pick up an antiqued taupe-mocha that bridges the greens and the ivory. Highlights in undyed cream silk outline the scrollwork and give the border its drawn, embroidered look. There is no navy and no hard black in the palette, which makes this a forgiving round rug for oak floors, painted furniture and neutral rooms where a saturated red field would fight the walls.

Made in China in the Tabriz Tradition

This rug was hand-knotted in China, in workshops that took the curvilinear Tabriz drawing style as their model and built a reputation on fine wool and silk weaving for the export market. The construction is honest workshop production: a tight cotton warp and weft, close rows of wool knots, and silk reserved for the flower heads, tendrils and outlines where the sheen earns its place. Round weaving is harder than rectangular weaving because the weaver loses width on every row and must keep the curve true without a straight edge to measure against, so a clean 8 foot circle like this one is evidence of a skilled loom. Among hand-knotted round rugs, a piece of this diameter with silk detailing and no wear at all is the exception rather than the rule.
