Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic Tabriz style all-over composition: no central medallion, just a continuous lattice of thin scrolling vines that carry palmettes, lotus heads, serrated leaves and small 8 petal rosettes across the whole surface. The drawing is curvilinear rather than angular, with each vine sweeping into the next so the eye never stops at a hard line, and the repeat is large enough that you notice new blossoms weeks after the rug is down. The main border is the showpiece: a deep black ground carrying alternating round and shield shaped cartouches filled with tiny sprigs, linked by red palmette scrollwork. Two ivory guard borders, each with a running vine of leaves and small buds, hold the black band in place and separate it cleanly from the field.

A Burgundy Field With Black, Ivory and Green Accents

The ground is a true burgundy, a deep wine red with a brown undertone rather than a bright fire red, and because the pile is wool with silk it reads darker in the direction of the nap and noticeably brighter against it. Over that field the flowers work in a warm range of antique gold, honey, camel and soft ivory, with sage and olive green reserved for the leaves and a few of the smaller blossoms. Small nodes of black outline the larger palmettes and tie the field visually to the black main border, which is the darkest note in the rug. The ivory guard stripes and the cotton fringe lift the whole palette and keep the burgundy from feeling heavy in a room with dark furniture.

Weaving Origin and Quality

This rug was made in Pakistan, where the best workshops around Lahore have spent decades weaving classical city designs on cotton foundations to a standard that rivals far more expensive pieces. The knotting here is fine and consistent, which is what allows the curved vines and the small cartouche fillers in the border to hold their shape instead of blurring, and the wool is a long staple quality that has been finished with a light wash to bring out the silk highlights.
