A true circle at 8'3" x 8'3", this is a hand-knotted Oriental rug drawn in the classical Tabriz floral manner and woven in wool with silk highlights over a cotton foundation. It is brand new and has never been on a floor, so the pile still stands full and the silk still flashes when the light moves across it. Big, well drawn 8 foot round rugs in this quality are uncommon, because a circle forces the weaver to redraw every curve of a rectangular cartoon. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion. Instead the ivory field carries a continuous all-over vine scroll that rotates around the center point, so the design reads correctly from every seat in the room, which is exactly what a round rug needs to do. Serrated palmettes, open cabbage roses, small 8 petal rosettes, curled saz leaves and tiny star flowers hang off thin arcing stems, with a small rosette marking the exact center of the circle. The field is framed by a wide floral main border and 4 narrower guard stripes of running rosette and leaf, each one bent to follow the curve without breaking the repeat. The outer edge finishes in a palmette cresting and a hand-knotted ivory fringe collar.

A Field of Ivory Warmed by Rose, Gold and Sage

The ground is a clean ivory, closer to warm cream than stark white, and it takes up most of the surface, which is what keeps a rug this busy feeling calm. Against it the weaver worked deep burgundy rosettes, dusty rose and old pink blossoms, soft antique gold roses with silk in the petals, and sage to olive green leaves that cool the whole palette. Fine navy outlining runs through the vine work and the flower cups, giving the drawing its definition without weight. The main border shifts to a softer taupe green and honey gold, so the edge frames the field rather than competing with it.

Woven in China to a Tabriz Drawing

This piece was hand-knotted in China, where the better workshops have spent decades weaving classical city designs to a high standard, and it shows in the tight, even knotting and the crisp registration of the curved lines. The wool is spun fine enough to hold small floral detail, and the silk is used sparingly as highlight in the rose petals and leaf tips, where it catches light and lifts the color. The back is regular and the circle is honest, with no pull or waviness at the edge. It is a workshop product in the best sense: consistent, finely drawn and built to be used.
