8' x 8'3" Round Wool and Silk Rug | Tabriz Design All-Over Floral on Black | Brand New
Round rugs of this quality are uncommon, and this one measures 8' x 8'3", a true circle drawn to a full 8 foot diameter rather than a trimmed rectangle. It is hand-knotted in wool with silk highlights on a cotton foundation, and the pile has the slight sheen you can see across the flower heads in the close-up photographs. The weave is tight and even, the circumference runs true with no flat spots or buckling, and the heavy ivory fringe is braided and secured by hand all the way around. It has never been on a floor, the pile is full height, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece.
Design and Motifs
This is a classic Tabriz drawing adapted to a circle, which is harder than it sounds: the weaver has to keep the all-over repeat reading correctly as the field curves away in every direction. There is no central medallion. Instead the black ground carries a continuous lattice of thin scrolling vines that link full palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, small star flowers and curled saz leaves, with the repeat mirrored so the pattern stays balanced from whichever chair you look at it. The border is built in 5 bands: a fine ivory guard, an inner ivory vine stripe, the wide maroon main band carrying alternating palmettes and cartouche-shaped floral cones, then a matching ivory stripe and a dark outer edge finish. Every leaf and petal is outlined in a darker shade, which is what gives the drawing its crispness against the black.
A Black Field Lit by Beige, Maroon and Olive
The field is a deep, flat black, close to true black rather than charcoal, and it works here as a backdrop the way a dark wall works behind a painting. Everything drawn on it is in the warm family: soft beige, sand, cream and pale apricot in the petals, with buttery gold at the flower centers and small touches of rust and terracotta. Olive and sage green carry the leaves and keep the vinework from reading as one tone, and clear raspberry and rose reds pick out the hearts of the larger blossoms. The main border is a deep maroon, more oxblood than bright red, framed top and bottom by ivory bands that lift the whole circle off a dark floor. The silk content sits mainly in the lighter highlights, so the beiges shift between matte and bright as you walk around the rug.
Origin and Weaving Quality
This rug was made in China, in a workshop weaving to the Tabriz pattern book, and it is an honest example of how good that work has become: fine, closely packed knots, tidy selvedges, clean color separation and a drawing that holds its curves. The back shown against the ruler tells the story, with small, regular knot nodes and no slack rows. As an Oriental rug it belongs to the same design lineage as the northwest Persian city weaves it copies, while being newly made, undamaged and priced well below an equivalent workshop piece from Tabriz itself. For a round dining table, a circular foyer or a reading corner under a drum shade, it is a hard combination to beat.
