8' x 8' Round Chinese Oriental Rug | Black Tabriz Design All Over Floral | Wool & Silk, Brand New

A full 8' x 8' round piece, hand-knotted in wool with silk highlights on a cotton foundation, drawn in the Tabriz manner with an all over floral field rather than a central medallion. The pile is dense and low, the silk catching light along the vine stems and rosette centers, and the circular format is cut true, with a black selvage and hand-tied ivory fringe running the whole circumference. It has never been used, the ends and edges are sound, and the piece ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug. Buyers hunting for 8 foot round rugs in a formal floral idiom rarely find them in wool and silk at this diameter.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The first overhead studio photograph reads warmer and more orange than the rug actually is. The floor shots and the close-ups of the field, border and fringe show the true palette: ivory and gold flowers with pink and sage accents on a true black ground, inside a deep maroon border. Judge the color from those detail images.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion. The field is an open, continuous floral trellis: thin curling vines carry multi-petal rosettes, small palmettes, feathered sickle leaves and tiny 5 point star blossoms outward in every direction, which is exactly the drawing a round rug needs, since no single edge has to read as the top. The close-up shows how carefully the vines are resolved, each rosette outlined in a darker shade so it lifts off the ground, with pink buds strung along the stems as breaks in the gold. The border system is ambitious for a 8 foot round piece: a wide maroon main band of lobed palmettes and leafy scroll, flanked on both sides by narrow ivory guard stripes of alternating rosettes, then an outer ivory band and a black outline that follows the curve cleanly without a single pinched corner.

A Black Field with Maroon, Gold and Pink

The ground is a genuine black, not a very dark navy or brown, and that is what makes everything above it work. Against it the flowers run from clotted cream and ivory through butter gold and a warmer antique gold, with sage and olive green in the leaves and small hits of coral pink and true red at the flower hearts. The maroon border is a deep oxblood, cool enough to sit beside the black without muddying it, and the ivory guard stripes give the whole circle a bright outer ring that frames the dark center. Silk is used selectively in the highlights, so the field shifts as you walk around it, lighter from one direction and almost velvet from the other. Within black Oriental rugs this is the dressier end of the range, built for a room with dark wood or strong contrast rather than a soft neutral scheme.

Woven in China in the Tabriz Tradition

This is honest Chinese workshop weaving, made in China to a Tabriz cartoon, and the workshops that produce this grade are the ones that took the classical curved line seriously: fine warps, a tight even beat, clipped low pile and the wool and silk mix that lets the drawing stay crisp at small scale. A circle is harder to weave than a rectangle, because the weaver loses warps on every pass and the design has to be compensated row by row, so the fact that this one lies flat and holds a true 8 foot diameter says a good deal about the loom it came off. The handle is firm, the back is regular, and the fringe and selvage are finished by hand. For anyone comparing wool and silk rugs in a round format, this one offers the formal floral look at a price the same drawing would never reach in a workshop piece from Tabriz itself.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
