7'8" x 10' Sino Tabriz Rug | Wool and Silk Floral Medallion on Black | Brand New

This 7'8" x 10' Sino Tabriz rug is brand new and never used, hand-knotted in the classic Tabriz manner: one round medallion floating at the center of a jet black field crowded with flowering vine, with a deep burgundy border holding the whole thing together. The pile is a blend of wool and silk, and you can see exactly where the silk went, because the ivory, apricot and gold outlines in the medallion and the guard stripes pick up light while the black ground stays quiet and matte behind them. At 92 inches by 120 inches it covers a sofa and coffee table grouping without crowding the walk-around, the same working footprint as our other 8x10 Oriental rugs. It ships with a certificate of authenticity recording the weave, materials and measurements.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a layered round medallion: an 8 petal rosette in burgundy and ivory at the core, a sage and beige ring of scrolling arabesque around it, then a scalloped outer collar studded with small heart-shaped palmettes. Above and below the medallion sit matching pendant cartouches, and the 4 corners carry pale apricot spandrels drawn with the same vine work, so the field reads as a framed garden rather than a loose pattern. Between those anchors the black ground is filled edge to edge with open roses, cloud-band leaves, bud sprays and thin red tendrils that connect every blossom to the next. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a narrow black outer band of upright lotus leaves, a beige band of small rosettes outlined in navy, the wide burgundy main border alternating large palmette bouquets with cypress-like floral sprays, then an inner beige guard with its own vine and a fine navy and ivory pinstripe separating it from the field.

Color: Jet Black Field with Burgundy, Sage and Apricot

The field is a true deep black, dense and even, with no abrash or lightening across the width, which is what makes the floral work look lit from within. The main border is a dark wine burgundy, slightly brighter than oxblood and clearly warmer than the field, and the guard borders shift to a soft apricot beige that cools toward ivory where the silk sits. Through the flowers you get muted sage and olive green in the leaves, dusty rose and salmon in the open roses, gold and old-gold in the bud centers, cream and ivory in the highlights, and small flashes of slate blue in a handful of rosettes that keep the warm tones honest. The medallion pulls all of it together in a pale sage and beige field with burgundy and gold detail. Against a grey stone floor, as photographed, the rug reads mostly black and red from standing height, and the greens and blues come forward once you are close.

Origin and Weave: Sino Tabriz Workmanship

This is a Sino Tabriz, meaning it was made in China by weavers working to the Tabriz drawing tradition, and it is a good example of why that category earned a following. The foundation is cotton, the pile is wool with silk worked into the highlights, and the knotting is tight enough to hold the curved line in the arabesque collar and the thin connecting tendrils without the drawing going blocky. The pile is clipped low and level, which is why the detail in the medallion stays legible, and the selvedges and hand-tied fringe are clean and square with no slack in the sides. For a buyer comparing weaving regions, the difference between a Chinese-made Oriental rug and a Persian one comes down to origin and hand rather than quality alone, and on drawing discipline and finish this piece holds its own. It has never been on a floor.
