9'2" x 12'3" Sino-Tabriz Wool and Silk Rug | Navy Floral Medallion | Brand New, Never Used

This is a fine Sino-Tabriz in the full room size, hand-knotted in wool with silk used to highlight the flowers, leaf tips and medallion outlines on a cotton foundation. It has never been on a floor: the pile stands up evenly across all 110 inches of width, the fringe is untouched and the navy selvage is tight and straight. At 9'2" x 12'3" it sits squarely in the most useful of all the 9x12 rugs, big enough to carry a sofa group or a 10 seat table on the rug rather than around it. Every piece we ship leaves here with a certificate of authenticity recording the weave, materials and measurements.

Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the classic Tabriz medallion layout, and it is drawn with a curved, confident line rather than a stiff one. A burgundy star medallion sits dead center, layered over a soft sage rosette core and finished with gold scrolling arabesques that hook outward like brackets at each of the 4 quarters. Long cusped pendants run north and south. The navy field around it is not left open: it is covered with a symmetrical lattice of vines, palmettes, serrated saz leaves, rose sprays and a small footed flower vase set on the axis at either end, visible in the field close-up. Ivory spandrels fill all 4 corners with the same vocabulary drawn small, each carrying a little burgundy cartouche. The wide burgundy main border alternates 8 petal gold rosettes with full blown roses and cusped leaves, framed by pale sage guard borders of trailing meander and small blossoms.

A Deep Navy Palette with Silk Catching the Light

The field is a true midnight navy, dark enough that from a standing position it reads almost black, then opens up into deep indigo when light rakes across it. Against it the palette is warm: burgundy in the medallion and the main border, olive and sage green in the leafwork, ivory and cream in the spandrels and guard stripes, honey gold in the arabesques, and rose pink in the roses and small blossoms scattered through the field. The silk is where the rug changes with the light, sitting on the petal edges and leaf tips so those details flash bright as you cross the room and settle back into the wool when you stop. It is a formal, jewel toned color story, and the navy ground makes the burgundy read richer than it would on ivory.

Sino-Tabriz Weaving and Quality

Sino-Tabriz means exactly what it says: a Chinese workshop weaving the Tabriz medallion design to a fine standard, and this is one of the good ones. The knotting is tight and regular, which is the only way the curved line of the arabesques and the tiny ivory blossoms in the spandrels hold their shape at this scale. The pile is clipped low and level so the pattern stays crisp, the wool is springy under the hand, and the silk is worked in as accent rather than as filler. Judged as an Oriental rug of this class, the finishing is the tell: straight sides, square corners, an even beat from end to end across more than 12 feet of length, and a back that shows clean rows with no drift in the pattern.
