6' x 9' Sino Tabriz Rug | Wool and Silk Navy Floral Medallion | Approx. 240 KPSI
This 6' x 9' Sino Tabriz is a workshop piece in the truest sense: hand-knotted at roughly 240 knots per square inch in fine wool with silk drawn through the highlights, on a cotton foundation, and never put on a floor. The pile still stands up sharp and even, the selvages are tight, and the ivory fringe has never been walked on. It is the sort of finely drawn Oriental rug that reads formal from across a room and rewards close inspection when you kneel down to it. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is genuinely hand-knotted, along with its size, materials and origin.
Design and Motifs
The layout is the classic Tabriz formula, drawn with unusual discipline. A large 8 lobed medallion sits dead center, built in concentric rings: a blue rosette core, an ivory petal ring, then a burgundy body filled with small blue and rose blossoms, finished with a serrated ivory outline and matching pendants top and bottom. The navy field around it is not left open for a moment; it carries a dense all over network of curling vines, palmettes, feathered lancet leaves and small 5 petal flowers, with 4 ivory corner spandrels that repeat the medallion drawing in miniature and shade into deep green at their inner edges. Three borders frame the whole thing, a wide burgundy main band of linked rosettes and paired leaves between narrower light blue guard stripes with their own floral chain. The vine work runs corner to corner without a break in the curve, which is the real test of a fine weave at this scale.
Color: Midnight Navy, Burgundy and Ivory
The field is a deep midnight navy, close to indigo in shadow and opening to a clearer blue where the light catches the silk. Against it the medallion and outer border read a true burgundy red, warm rather than orange, with the silk accents lifting the small blossoms into a brighter sky blue and turquoise. Ivory does the structural work here: it outlines the medallion, fills the 4 spandrels, and draws every guard stripe, so the eye always has a clean edge to follow. Bottle green appears in the spandrel corners and through the leaf work, salmon and soft rose warm the smaller flowers, and touches of pale gold and cream sit inside the rosette centers. It is a saturated, formal palette that anchors light oak and pale plaster, and it sits comfortably with mahogany, brass and dark leather.
Sino-Tabriz Weaving and Quality
Sino-Tabriz means exactly what it says: a Chinese workshop weaving the Tabriz design vocabulary to a high standard, and the best of these houses build their reputation on knot count and drawing rather than on shortcuts. At approximately 240 knots per square inch this piece is well above the density of ordinary decorative production, which is why the curved vines hold their line and the small blossoms stay legible instead of blurring into blocks. The wool is spun fine and clipped low, the silk is used with restraint in the highlights rather than sprayed across the whole field, and the back shows an even, tight knot line with no pull or waviness. Among 6x9 Oriental rugs this is a lot of hand work for the footprint, and in never used condition the pile has its full original height still in front of it.
