6' x 9' Sino Tabriz Wool and Silk Rug | Ivory Floral Medallion Design | Brand New, Never Used

This is a brand new, never used 6' x 9' hand-knotted rug woven in China in the classic Tabriz medallion manner, with a fine wool pile lifted by silk in the flowers, scrollwork and medallion core. The weave is tight and even, the drawing is curvilinear rather than village-angular, and the pile has been clipped low so that every vine tip and petal edge stays legible. At this size it settles neatly under a seating group or a six seat dining table, and it sits in the most requested proportion on the site, our 6 x 9 rugs. Every piece we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is genuine hand-knotted work, and this one carries our inventory tag number 6623, shown in the final photograph.

Design and Motifs

The field is built around a round medallion with a stepped 8 petal rosette at its heart, ringed by a burgundy band and then by a collar of tight scrolling arabesques that reads almost like lacework at close range. Small pointed pendants run off the medallion at top and bottom, and matching floral cartouches anchor the upper and lower thirds of the field. Around all of that the ivory ground is filled edge to edge with an all-over floral repeat: open roses, palmettes, serrated leaves, half rosettes and thin stems that curve back on themselves. Large quarter medallion spandrels fill the 4 corners of the field, and the main border carries an alternating sequence of flowering sprays and leaf forms between narrow guard stripes, closed by an outer meander in gold and rust. The symmetry holds across both axes, which is the mark of a cartoon drawn properly and followed knot for knot.

Ivory, Sage and Camel: Reading the Palette

The field is a clean warm ivory, closer to cream than to stark white, and it is what makes the rug feel light in a room. Against it the drawing works in three registers: soft sage green in the spandrels and the inner guard, a camel to light beige ground in the main border, and accents of deep burgundy, olive gold, dusty rose and a muted cornflower blue scattered through the flowers. The medallion is the one place the color concentrates, with a burgundy ring and pale pink and blue petal work at the center. Dark navy outlining defines the vines and keeps the pattern crisp instead of muddy. Where silk has been used, the color shifts as you walk around the rug, so the gold scrollwork and the rose heads brighten and dim with the light. It is a quiet, neutral-leaning palette that lives comfortably with warm woods, cream upholstery and gray or greige walls.

Sino Tabriz Weaving and the Quality of This Piece

Sino Tabriz means exactly what it says: a Chinese workshop weaving the Tabriz floral medallion vocabulary, hand-knotted on a cotton foundation with a wool and silk pile. Chinese ateliers took up these cartoons decades ago and built a reputation for very fine, very disciplined curvilinear work, and this rug shows it in the tight radius of the arabesques, the clean ivory selvage and the neatly tied fringe visible at both ends. The back is even, the knotting is dense enough to hold detail at the scale of a single rose head, and the low clip gives the surface a slight sheen where the silk sits.
