This is a Sino-Tabriz, hand-knotted in China to the Tabriz draft in a blend of wool and silk, and it is the kind of piece that explains why so much of today's best hand-knotted work comes out of that program. The field is ivory, the borders a deep burgundy, and the silk is placed where it does the most work: in the outlines, the flower centers and the fine leaf tips, so the drawing lifts and shifts as you walk past it. The pile is clipped low and evenly, which is what keeps the detail legible from standing height rather than turning into a blur. It has never been used and arrives in perfect condition, with a certificate of authenticity. Design and Motifs

The center holds an 8 petal star medallion on a burgundy ground, built up in concentric rings: a small rosette at the core, then a ring of lobed petals filled with rose sprays, then pointed cartouches radiating outward like rays. Above and below it sit matching pendants, and each of the 4 corners carries a burgundy spandrel drawn as a heart shaped palmette. Between those anchors the ivory field is filled with a curvilinear all over of scrolling vines, split leaves, rosettes and small blossoms, all drawn in the flowing curved line the Tabriz style is known for. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a wide burgundy main border of alternating peonies and palmettes linked by thin vine, flanked by ivory and taupe guard stripes carrying a running flower meander, closed by narrow outer stripes and hand-tied ivory fringe. The layout is fully symmetrical on both axes, so it reads correctly from every side of the room.

Ivory Ground, Burgundy Borders and Sage Green Accents

The field is a warm ivory, closer to soft cream than white, with a faint buttery cast where the silk catches light. Against it the borders and the medallion ground are a deep burgundy, a wine red rather than a bright tomato red, which is what keeps the piece calm in a formal room. The secondary palette is where the rug earns its money: dusty rose and antique pink in the large peonies, sage and celadon green in the leaves and the medallion core, slate blue in the small flower heads, camel and taupe in the vine work, and touches of near black outlining that sharpen every petal. The guard stripes and spandrel grounds shade into a mushroom taupe that bridges the ivory and the burgundy instead of letting them collide. It is a palette that sits easily with navy upholstery, cognac leather and natural oak flooring, as the room photo shows, and it works with both cool grey and warm wood floors.

Sino-Tabriz means exactly what it says: a Tabriz pattern, woven in China by hand on a cotton foundation, knot by knot, with wool and silk in the pile. The best of these workshops weave to a genuinely fine count, which is the only way a curved line, a 5 band border and an 8 petal medallion can stay crisp instead of stepping into zigzags, and the back of this piece shows the tight, regular knotting that makes that possible. The silk is real silk, used as highlight rather than as the whole pile, so you get the sheen without giving up the durability of a wool surface underfoot.
