7'9" x 10' Sino-Tabriz Wool and Silk Rug | Ivory Floral Medallion | Recent, Never Used

This is a recent workshop piece that has never been walked on: the pile still stands full and even, the ivory ground is clean from selvage to selvage, and the hand-tied fringe has not been brushed or trimmed. At 7'9" x 10" of finished measurement it sits squarely in the most useful room size a buyer can own, which is why it slots neatly alongside our other 8 x 10 rugs. The pile blends wool with silk on a cotton foundation, so the outlines stay crisp while the highlights catch light as you move around the room. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is hand-knotted, and this one is priced as what it is: a finely drawn Tabriz-design piece woven in China, in perfect condition, with no restoration story attached.

Design and Motifs

The layout is the classic Tabriz formula, drawn carefully rather than hurried. A round medallion sits dead center, built out from an 8 petal rosette core into concentric rings of tiny blossoms, then framed by a scalloped sage cartouche and a burgundy outline with lobed cresting on all sides. Pendant palmettes drop above and below it on the long axis, and matching quarter medallions fill the 4 corners as spandrels, each one packed with roses and leafy sprays. The open ivory ground between them carries a true all-over vine field: thin dark stems curve in mirrored arcs and carry rosettes, cupped roses, lanceolate leaves and small palmettes, with the drawing repeated symmetrically left to right and top to bottom. The framing runs to 5 bands, a broad main border of alternating palmettes and rosette clusters on a pale ground, two narrow floral guard stripes on either side, and a fine serrated outer edge that finishes the rug cleanly at the selvage.

A Detailed Look at the Colors

The field is a warm ivory, closer to cream than to stark white, and it is what makes the rest of the palette read so quietly. Green does most of the structural work: a soft sage to moss green fills the corner spandrels and much of the medallion ground, and the same tone reappears in the leaves scattered across the field. Burgundy is the accent that carries the eye, used in the small cupped roses across the ivory ground, in the medallion outline and in the scrolling motifs of the main border. Around those two poles sit a range of browns and tans, from a light camel in the larger blossoms to a deeper walnut in the border scrollwork, with occasional soft slate blue and pale gold flowers breaking the rhythm so the repeat never looks mechanical. Stems and outlines are drawn in a near-black charcoal that keeps every flower head separate at floor distance. The silk in the pile shows itself in the highlights, where a petal or a leaf tip looks a shade lighter from one angle and a shade deeper from the other.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was made in China, in the workshop tradition that trade calls Sino-Tabriz: weavers working from a full cartoon of a Tabriz medallion design, on a cotton warp, with wool and silk in the pile. It is an Oriental rug rather than a village piece, and the difference shows in the drawing: the medallion is truly round, the spandrels match each other corner for corner, and the curved vine holds its line across nearly 10 feet without wobbling, which only happens at a high knot count on a tightly drawn cartoon. The back photograph next to a ruler shows small, regular knots and even rows, and the pile has been clipped low so the detail stays legible. That combination, fine weave, restrained ivory and green palette, and unused condition, makes it an easy rug to live with and an easy one to place in a formal room without competing with the furniture.
