Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the Tabriz workshop layout closely. Narrow black pendants drop from the top and bottom of the medallion, and matching black cartouches anchor the 4 corners inside tan spandrels. Around all of that runs an all over field of fine scrolling vine work: small roses, buds, serrated leaves and blossoms placed in mirrored repeats rather than scattered at random, which is what keeps a field this large from looking empty. The border system is layered, a wide black main band of palmettes and rose sprays flanked by beige and tan guard stripes with running rosettes, and the fine outer stripes hold the whole composition together with an ivory selvage and plain cotton fringe.

The field is a warm cream, closer to unbleached ivory than to white, and it gives the rug its light.
