8'6" x 11'8" Wool and Silk Oriental Rug | Tabriz Medallion Design | Brand New, Never Used

This is a workshop piece: a hand-knotted Oriental rug made in India, drawn in the classic Tabriz medallion manner, with a wool pile carrying silk highlights through the flowers, the medallion and the corner spandrels. The silk sits slightly lower than the wool and reflects light differently, so the pattern shifts as you walk past it, most visibly across the burgundy border. It is brand new and has never been on a floor, with full pile, straight sides and clean ivory fringe at both ends. The 8'6" width and 11'8" length make it a genuine room size, wider and longer than most 8x11 rugs and close enough to a 9x12 to fill a space planned for one. It ships with a certificate of authenticity recording its size, materials, weave and origin.

Design and Motifs

The layout is the full Tabriz formula, drawn without shortcuts. A round central medallion sits on a small stepped star core, ringed by a scalloped turquoise band and finished top and bottom with pendant finials. Around it the field is worked in dense curved vine scroll, palmettes, rosettes and split leaves, so tightly filled that the black ground shows only as outline. Four corner spandrels repeat the medallion drawing in quarter form, each anchored by a large blue palmette, and the field is mirrored along both axes so the pattern reads the same from either end of the room. The main border carries a rhythm of cartouches and turned palmettes on burgundy, flanked by narrow ivory and pale blue guard stripes and a fine outer meander. The drawing stays crisp at the curves, which is the test of this pattern and the reason it needs a high knot count to work at all.

Black Field, Burgundy Border and a Turquoise Center

The field is black, and that is what gives the rug its weight and its slightly formal, evening character. Against it the flowers are drawn in dusty rose, soft pink, ivory, sage and deep green, with cool light blue and navy scattered through the leaves and palmettes. The medallion is the brightest point on the rug, a turquoise and ivory center with navy outlining and small touches of gold and burgundy inside it. The border swings the temperature back to warm: a deep burgundy, closer to oxblood than to bright red, filled with ivory and blue flower heads and edged in cream. Brown and tan tones link the two zones so the black and the burgundy never fight. Practically, the dark ground hides everyday traffic well, and the palette works with walnut and mahogany furniture, brass, cream walls and warm neutral upholstery.

Woven in India in the Tabriz Tradition

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug is a clear example of why. It was woven on a cotton foundation with a fine, tightly packed wool and silk pile, at a knot count high enough to hold the curved vine work and the small floral heads without blurring. The back, shown against a tape measure in the last photograph, tells the story: even rows, small clean knots and a pattern that reads almost as sharply from behind as it does from the pile side. The ends are secured and finished with hand-tied ivory fringe, and the black selvage is wrapped tight. Among current production Oriental rugs, this level of drawing and silk detailing in a large room size is uncommon, and it is offered here brand new, never walked on, in perfect condition.
