8'6" x 11'6" Wool & Silk Oriental Rug | Black Tabriz Design Medallion | New, Never Used

This is a hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in China in the classic Tabriz medallion drawing, measuring 8'6" x 11'6" and never used. The pile is wool with silk worked into the flowers, medallion and vine work, which is why the design catches the light differently as you walk around it. At 102" x 138" it covers the 9x12 area rug footprint that most large living and dining rooms are planned around, with enough field left under a sofa or a 8 seat table to hold the room together. Design and Motifs

The layout is the textbook Tabriz formula, drawn with unusual patience. A round central medallion sits on a lobed rosette core, ringed by a wreath of burgundy cartouches and finished top and bottom with anchor-shaped pendants that reach out into the field. The field itself is not left quiet: it carries a dense all over lattice of scrolling vines, palmettes, serrated leaves and small open roses, mirrored perfectly across both axes so the drawing reads the same from either end of the room. The 4 corner spandrels repeat the medallion vocabulary in a softer key, and small stepped burgundy panels punctuate the field edges. Five bands frame the whole thing: a wide ivory main border of alternating palmettes and rosettes joined by a thin vine, flanked by burgundy guard stripes and narrow reciprocal minor borders, with the outermost line finishing in black to close the composition. The close photographs show clean curved lines through the arabesques, which is the real test of a medallion rug at this scale.

A Black Field With Ivory, Burgundy and Green

The ground is a true deep black, close to ink rather than charcoal, and it does the work of making every other color look brighter than it is. Against it the floral work runs through cream, blush, apricot and soft salmon, with pale ivory blossoms picked out in silk so they lift off the surface under lamplight. Burgundy is the anchor tone, used for the cartouche wreath around the medallion, the guard stripes and the small field panels, and it leans wine red rather than orange. Green appears as sage and olive in the leaves and stems, quiet enough to act as shading rather than a statement. The medallion center is the lightest point in the rug, a warm ivory disc with a blush halo, so the eye lands there first. Around all of it the wide border reads as a soft ivory to light beige, which keeps the black field from feeling heavy and gives the rug an obvious edge against dark wood or a pale stone floor.

Where It Was Woven and How Well

This rug was made in China, in the tradition of the fine workshop weaving that took the Tabriz medallion drawing as its model and built a reputation on tight, even knotting and careful wool and silk blends. The back photograph, shot next to a ruler, shows small regular knots and straight rows with no pull or waviness in the selvages, which is what allows a design this detailed to stay crisp instead of blurring. The cotton foundation gives the rug weight and keeps it lying flat, the wool pile is dense underfoot and cut low enough to hold the fine drawing, and the silk is reserved for highlights rather than sprayed across the whole field. It is new and never used, so the pile stands full height, the fringes are clean, and the colors are exactly as the loom left them.
