Design and Motifs

There is no medallion. The field is a formal all-over floral repeat set on a fine tracery of thin dark vines, with large lobed palmettes, fanned lotus blossoms, 8 petal rosettes and serrated acanthus leaves mirrored row against row so the pattern reads the same from either long side. Small tulip and carnation sprays fill the gaps, and each blossom is shaded through 3 or 4 tones before it is outlined, which is what gives the flowers their carved, almost three dimensional look in the close photos. The border is the other half of the story: a wide navy main band carrying pale ivory and gold palmettes on curling arabesque vines, flanked by brick rust bands of alternating rosettes and leaf sprays, then narrow camel guard stripes with a running meander, and finally a plain ivory outer edge that lifts the whole frame off the floor. The corners resolve cleanly, with the palmette turning rather than being cut, which is the mark of a drawn cartoon followed properly.

A Warm Ivory Field Framed in Navy and Rust
