9'2" x 12'3" Jaipur Oriental Rug | Black & Burgundy All Over Floral | Dense Lustrous Wool

This is a brand new, never used 9'2" x 12'3" hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in Jaipur, India, in dense lustrous wool on a cotton foundation. The pile has that heavy, slightly glossy handle you only get from good highland wool packed tightly on the loom, and the drawing is clean enough that every stem and leaf tip holds its shape rather than blurring into the field. It falls squarely into the most useful footprint in the house, so it sits comfortably alongside our other 9x12 area rugs while offering a color scheme almost nobody else carries in this size. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted, with the size, materials and origin stated in writing.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic all over floral composition with no central medallion: large rounded blossoms and rosettes alternate with upright palmettes and pomegranate buds, all linked by a slender ivory vine that loops the full length of the rug. Look closely at image 10 and you can count the layers inside a single rosette, petal rings drawn in four and five separate shades before the outline closes. Serrated leaves and curling acanthus forms fill the gaps, and small paired leaf sprays sit at the axis points where the vines cross. The main border repeats a bolder version of the same idea, big turned palmettes and rosettes on a plain ground, framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of little four petal flowers and running stems. Corners are resolved properly, with the border pattern turning the angle instead of being cut off, which is the first place cheap weaving gives itself away.

Color Palette

The ground is a true deep black, not a very dark navy or charcoal, and the lustre in the wool makes it read almost like ink under lamplight. Against it the flowers are drawn in warm ivory, soft salmon and rose, dusty terracotta and clay, with olive and moss green used for the leaves and for shading inside the larger blossoms. Small hits of dark red and slate grey appear in the flower centers and keep the palette from going too sweet. The main border switches to a rich burgundy that reads as a deep wine rather than a bright red, and it is bracketed by camel and ivory guard bands that lift the whole frame away from the black field. The outer selvage returns to black, so the rug finishes on a dark line and holds its shape visually on a pale floor. Expect the black to look denser in daylight and the salmon and green tones to warm up considerably under evening light.

Jaipur and the surrounding workshops of Rajasthan are where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and we say that without hedging.
