9' x 12' Jaipur Oriental Rug | Burgundy All Over Floral | Fine Lustrous Wool, New
This is a new, never used room-size piece hand-knotted in Jaipur with a deep burgundy field, a wide black floral border and a pile of fine lustrous wool that already has the sheen you normally wait years for. At 9' x 12' it covers a standard living room or seats a 10-chair dining table with the border still reading clearly on all 4 sides, and it sits among our most practical 9x12 Persian & Oriental rugs because the proportion suits so many American floor plans. The handle is substantial without being stiff, the selvages are tight, the cotton fringe is full and even, and the back shows clean, regular knotting with no repairs or reweaves. Every rug we ship, including this one, comes with a certificate of authenticity stating the weave, materials, size and origin.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is a classic Mughal-inspired all over floral design with no central medallion, so the field reads as a continuous garden rather than a single focal point. Large fan-shaped palmettes rise on slender stems, flanked by long serrated acanthus leaves and paired cypress-like sprays, with 8 petal rosettes and small carnation heads filling the spaces between. The repeat mirrors left to right and top to bottom, which is why the pattern looks ordered from a standing height and almost free-drawn when you kneel down to it. The main black border carries oversized cream and gold rosettes set between curling leaves, each corner resolved with a full blossom rather than a cut-off motif, and 2 narrow ivory guard stripes of meandering vine separate border from field. A plain burgundy outer band finishes the edge and frames the whole composition.
The Color Palette
The ground is a deep burgundy that leans toward aubergine and plum where the light falls across the pile, darker in the shadows and warmer where the nap turns, the natural movement you get from good wool rather than a flat printed tone. Against it the palmettes are worked in gold, honey, wheat and soft apricot, the leaves in olive and sage green with teal-leaning outlines, and the smaller blossoms in salmon and terracotta with black centers. The border is a true black, which is what gives this rug its weight: the cream and gold rosettes sit on it with real contrast, and the burgundy field looks richer for being enclosed in something that dark. Ivory guard stripes keep the 2 strong tones from colliding. The palette is a safe companion for cherry, walnut and mahogany furniture, and it belongs squarely among burgundy and red Oriental rugs for anyone decorating a traditional room.
Woven in Jaipur, India
Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the strongest hand-knotting centers working today, and India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted rugs are now made, a fact worth saying plainly rather than hiding. The workshops there inherited the court drawing traditions of Agra and Jaipur, and the best of them still weave on cotton warps with hand-spun wool, hand-clipped pile and a depth of knotting that holds this much floral detail without the motifs blurring. On this piece the leaf tips stay crisp, the rosette petals are individually outlined, and the pile has been sheared low enough to keep the pattern legible while leaving plenty of wool underfoot. If you are weighing it against Persian weaving, our guide on the difference between Persian rugs and Oriental rugs explains exactly where this one sits, and why a well-made Indian rug of this grade buys more design and more size for the money.
