Woven in Jaipur and measuring a true 9' x 12', this is a brand new hand-knotted rug that reads far older than it is. The field is deep burgundy, the main border is near-black, and the floral drawing between them stays tight and legible right into all 4 corners, which is the part cheaper weaves give away first. The pile is fine wool with a soft sheen visible in the close-up photos, laid on a cotton foundation and finished with plain ivory fringe. It is one of the most usable 9x12 rugs we stock, never walked on, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it was knotted by hand rather than machine made or tufted.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The whole surface is an all-over floral design, built from a scrolling vine that carries large serrated palmettes, open rosettes, lotus heads, curling acanthus leaves and small 4 petal blossom clusters that fill the gaps between the bigger flowers. The repeat shifts slightly as it travels, so the eye keeps finding new blossoms instead of locking onto a grid. The main border is the drama: big gold and rust palmettes alternating with leafy scrolls on a black ground, framed inside and out by sage green guard stripes that carry a smaller running vine. The inner sage stripe does real work, separating the burgundy field from the black border so neither one swallows the other.

A Burgundy Field With Sage, Gold and Black

The ground is a full wine burgundy, warm rather than orange-red, and it moves slightly under raking light the way good wool does. Against it the flowers are drawn mostly in celadon and sage green, soft olive, cream and ivory, with saffron gold and touches of rust orange for the hottest accents and small notes of pale sky blue inside the rosette centers. Black outlines sharpen the larger blossoms and keep the palette from going soft. The border reverses the scheme entirely: a dense black ground with gold, apricot, rust and pale green blooms sitting on it, so the rug frames itself. Overall the read from a standing height is burgundy and black with green and gold lighting it up, which sits comfortably with warm woods, brass, leather and cream walls.
