12' x 17'6" Jaipur Rug | Burgundy Mahal All-Over Floral | Hand-Knotted Wool, Brand New

This is a true palace piece: 12' x 17'6" of hand-knotted wool, drawn in the Mahal manner with an uninterrupted all-over floral field rather than a central medallion. It has never been on a floor. The wool is heavy and lustrous, the cream border wide enough to read as architecture from across a room, and the drawing stays disciplined over the full length, which is the hard part at this scale. As a genuinely Oriental rug in the classical sense, it belongs with the best contemporary hand-knotted work, and it sits squarely in the 12x18 oversize bracket that most homes struggle to fill. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming it is handmade, knot by knot, exactly as described here.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The soft lines and shadows visible in the full overhead photograph are fold marks from flat storage on the pallet. They are not wear, not fading and not damage. A rug of this weight is folded to be stored and the marks relax once it is laid flat. Every rug leaves us professionally steamed and pressed before shipping.

Design and Motifs

The field is a classic all-over floral design: large crowned palmettes alternating with open rosettes, linked by thin scrolling vines and flanked by long curling serrated leaves that give the repeat its rhythm. Look closely at the close-up photographs and you can see how each palmette is built, with an inner cartouche outlined in near-black, a pale sage center, and four or five graded outlines stepping outward from cream to gold to rust. Small 8 petal blossoms and paired leaf sprays fill the ground between the larger figures so there is no dead space anywhere in 17'6" of length. The wide cream main border carries its own alternating scheme of dark rosettes and sage green quatrefoils joined by a vine with pendant leaves and tiny birds, framed on both sides by narrow rust and camel guard stripes filled with running floral meanders. The corners resolve cleanly, which on an oversize piece tells you the cartoon was followed properly rather than improvised at the ends.

The Burgundy, Cream and Sage Palette

The ground is a deep burgundy, closer to wine and oxblood than to bright red, and it darkens further where the pile lies away from the light, giving the field real depth. Against it the pattern is worked in soft cream and ivory, warm camel gold, and a muted rust that reads almost terracotta in the leaf tips. The green is a quiet sage and olive rather than a saturated tone, used mostly in the palmette centers and the border quatrefoils, and it keeps the red and gold from turning too warm. A few motifs carry near-black outlining that sharpens the drawing, and the border field is a clean cream that lifts the whole rug and makes the burgundy look richer by contrast. The overall effect is formal and traditional, warm under lamplight, and forgiving of both dark hardwood and pale stone floors.

Woven in Jaipur, India

Jaipur in Rajasthan is one of the great modern weaving centers, and India is where most of the world's finest contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced. This rug is Made in India on a cotton foundation with a full wool pile, hand-knotted one knot at a time rather than tufted or machine made, as the folded-back corner photograph shows. The knotting is even and tight enough to hold the fine outlines in the palmettes, and the pile has been left with good body, which is what an oversize rug of this footprint needs to lie flat and take traffic in a great room or a long formal dining space. The selvages are firm, the ivory cotton fringe is full and untrimmed, and at 12' x 17'6" the piece is brand new and ready for a floor it can finally cover properly.
