9' x 12' Jaipur Oriental Rug | Traditional All-Over Floral on Beige | Hand-Knotted Wool | Brand New

This is a brand new, never used room size rug hand-knotted in Jaipur on a cotton foundation with a full wool pile, drawn in the traditional antique style that Indian workshops have been refining for generations. At 9' x 12' it covers a standard 12x15 room with the right amount of floor showing at the edges, which is why it sits in the most requested of all 9x12 Oriental rugs we stock. The pile is even and plush end to end, the selvages are tight, the ends are hand-finished with cotton fringe, and there is no wear anywhere on the piece. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted, along with its origin, materials and measurements.

Please Note About the Photographs:

A few small bright spots appear on the beige field in the wide studio shots. Those are reflections of the overhead lights bouncing off the wool pile, not wear, not fade and not damage. The rug is in perfect condition, and it is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic all-over floral design with no central medallion, so the pattern repeats in mirrored pairs the full length of the rug and reads correctly from every seat in the room. Scrolling vines in brown and soft gold run top to bottom, opening into large lotus palmettes, serrated split leaves, fan-shaped carnation heads, small 8 petal rosettes and slender paisley forms, with tiny diamond cartouches set along the central axis where the vines cross. The drawing is curvilinear rather than village geometric, and the outlining is done in dark brown and black wool, which is what gives each flower its crisp edge against the open ground. Three borders frame the field: a wide olive main border filled with palmettes, bird-like vine terminals and cloudband scrolls, flanked by narrow brick-red guard stripes and an outer gold band of alternating blossoms and leaf pairs. The corners resolve cleanly, the border count is balanced for the 9' x 12' proportion, and the overall effect is formal without being heavy.

Color: Beige Ground, Olive and Antique Gold Borders

The ground is a warm beige that leans toward cream in the center and picks up a faint camel tone where the light rakes across the pile, which makes this an easy piece for rooms already working in beige and ivory rugs and neutral upholstery. Against that ground the florals are worked in cocoa brown, chestnut, antique gold and mustard, with deep burgundy used sparingly inside the flower hearts and on the smallest buds so the accents punctuate rather than dominate. Several of the larger blossoms are shaded in a muted sage grey-green with pale ivory and dusty rose petal tips, a soft combination that keeps the field from looking monochrome. The main border shifts to a dry olive green, a color that gives the rug its character and separates it from the standard red and navy formula, and it is edged with brick-red and a lighter honey gold that ties straight back into the field. Ivory highlights in the border motifs and the natural cotton fringe finish the palette on a bright note.

Jaipur Weaving and Quality

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great weaving centers of northern India and the place where most of the finest traditional floral work now comes off the loom. India is where the best contemporary hand-knotted weaving is being done today, and we say that with confidence: the workshops there keep master drawing, hand-spun wool and double-knotted construction alive at a scale nowhere else matches. You can see the standard on the back of this piece, where the knotting is regular row to row and the pattern reads almost as clearly from behind as from the front. The wool is springy and lanolin-rich, which is why the pile recovers from foot traffic instead of flattening, and the cotton warps and wefts keep the rug lying dead flat without bubbling. If you are weighing this against the alternatives, our guide on the difference between a Persian and an Oriental rug explains exactly what you are buying here: a new, unused, honestly priced Indian hand-knotted rug built to be walked on for decades.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
