9' x 12' Ziegler Chobi Oriental Rug | Beige All-Over Floral Vine | Hand-Knotted Wool

This is the quiet end of the hand-knotted world: a brand new Ziegler Chobi in hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, drawn in soft beige, sage green and brown with no medallion to fight the furniture. At 9x12 room size it fills a standard living room wall to wall, with room for a sofa and chairs to sit fully on the pile. The wool is dense and springy underfoot, the pile is even from end to end, and the back (images 5, 6 and 16) shows clean, regular knotting with a straight selvage and a tidy finish. It has never been used, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The field carries an all-over floral design built on a lattice of thin, looping vines that never quite repeat the same way twice. Sitting on that lattice are 8 petal rosettes with green centers, fan shaped palmettes that open like a peacock tail, curling serrated leaves, and small 4 petal blossoms scattered as filler (see the close details in images 11, 12, 14 and 15). The main border runs a broad procession of alternating palmettes and leafy scrolls, framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of reciprocal boxes and tiny flower heads, and the corners are resolved cleanly at all 4 turns. Because there is no central medallion, the pattern stays continuous and forgiving under a coffee table or a dining set, and the rug can be turned end for end without the layout looking wrong.

A Beige Field with Sage Green and Brown

The ground is a warm beige that shifts toward golden camel where the light catches the pile and back toward pale sand where it does not, the natural abrash of hand-spun, naturally dyed wool. The main border is worked in the same beige, while the guard stripes and many of the leaves are a dusty sage green, the color that gives the rug its cool counterweight. Brown and soft rust carry the vine lines and the larger palmettes, olive and khaki fill the leaf bodies, and the drawing is picked out with restrained accents: denim and indigo blue in the flower centers and feathered palmettes, and pinpricks of rose and raspberry that only show up close (images 10 and 14). Nothing shouts. The whole palette sits within a few steps of one another, which is why this rug works with oak floors, linen upholstery, greenery and both warm white and greige walls.

Ziegler Chobi Weaving in Pakistan

The Ziegler design vocabulary, a soft, open, botanical drawing made for large Western rooms, was revived decades ago by the weaving workshops of Pakistan, and that is where the best of it is produced today. Chobi refers to the wood and plant based dyes used for the yarn, which is why the greens, rusts and golds here look settled rather than sharp. This piece is knotted by hand, one knot at a time, on a cotton warp and weft, with hand-spun wool that varies slightly in thickness and takes dye unevenly on purpose. It is finished with a light wash that softens the surface without stripping it, and it is an honest, well made Oriental rug: new, unused, and built to be walked on for the next few decades.
