9' x 12' Chobi Ziegler Oriental Rug | All Over Floral and Vine Design | Natural Beige Wool, Brand New

This is a full room-size Chobi Ziegler, hand-knotted in Pakistan in natural wool on a cotton foundation and never used. At 9' x 12' it covers a standard living room wall to wall or seats a 10 chair dining table with the chairs still on the rug, which makes it one of the most practical formats in the 9x12 Persian and Oriental rugs group. The whole piece reads as one quiet field of beige and soft gold, with the drawing carried in muted rust, olive and pale blue rather than in strong contrast, so it settles into a room instead of competing with it. The pile is medium, dense and slightly lustrous where the light crosses it, and the hand is supple enough that the rug lies flat without a pad fighting it. Every rug ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, wool pile and country of origin.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field is an all over design built on a thin brown vine that loops into soft diamond compartments, each one anchored by an 8 petal rosette and flanked by large crowned palmettes with serrated red outlines. Smaller split leaves, tulip sprays and little hooked rust tendrils fill the spaces between, drawn loosely by hand so no two repeats match exactly. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a narrow outer stripe, a reciprocal cloud-and-bracket guard, the wide main border of alternating gold palmettes and rust and gold leaf clusters, then two more inner guards that frame the field cleanly at all 4 corners. The corner resolutions are handled properly, with the main border motifs turning rather than being cut off, which is the detail that separates a well drawn Ziegler from a rushed one.

A Palette of Beige, Soft Gold and Faded Rust

The ground is a warm beige that shifts toward sand and soft gold as the nap changes direction, and the border ground is a half shade lighter, closer to ivory, which is what gives the rug its framed look from across the room. Against that base the weaver worked in a deliberately low contrast range: dusty rust and deep brick red in the rosette outlines, soft olive and sage in the leaves, antique gold in the palmette petals, powder pink in the small blossoms and a cool pale blue used sparingly inside the flower hearts. The outlining vine is a quiet walnut brown. Nothing is saturated, so the rug behaves like a neutral and sits comfortably with oak and walnut furniture, linen upholstery or white plaster walls, which is exactly why collectors of beige and ivory rugs keep coming back to the Chobi palette.

Woven in Pakistan: The Ziegler Weaving Tradition

Ziegler refers to the softened, open floral drawing that European trading firms commissioned in the late 19th century for Western interiors, and the pattern has been kept alive by the weaving centers around Lahore and Peshawar, where Chobi production is now concentrated. Pakistan is one of the few places still turning out serious volumes of hand-knotted work at this scale, using hand-spun wool, a cotton warp and weft and a double-wefted village structure that gives the rug weight and a flat, stable lie. The knotting on this piece is even across all 12 feet of length, the edges are hand-overcast and the kilim ends are woven tight with no loose warps, which is what you look for in a new Oriental rug intended for daily use. Wool at this grade takes decades of traffic and generally gains a little sheen as it wears in.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
