8' x 10' Chobi Peshawar Oriental Rug | Ziegler All-Over Floral Design | Brand New Natural Wool
This piece is a brand new Chobi Peshawar in the Zigler drawing, hand-knotted in natural hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation and shipped with our certificate of authenticity. The field is a quiet sand beige that lifts to gold where the light crosses it, and across that ground runs one continuous floral vine with no medallion to interrupt it, which is why these rugs sit so easily under furniture. The pile has never been walked on: the wool still stands upright, the fringe is clean and the back is tight and even, as the folded corner photograph shows. At 8 feet by 10 feet it is the working size for a seating group, and among 8x10 Oriental rugs this warm neutral palette is the one decorators ask for most.
Design and Motifs
The field is an all-over floral design built on a wide ogee lattice. Where the lattice crosses, the weaver has set a large coral fan palmette, and between those a small hexagonal cartouche enclosing a single bud, visible in the close detail shot. The vine itself carries clusters of 4 petal quatrefoil flowers in brick red and coral, broad serrated leaves drawn like oak foliage, and a handful of blossoms in a muted sage that reads almost grey from a distance. Three borders frame it: a narrow outer stripe of red quatrefoils on brown, a wide main border of alternating vases and leafy palmettes on a pale ivory ground, and a twin guard stripe of small red birds and arabesques that runs between them. The corners are resolved cleanly on all 4 sides, with the main border turning the angle without crowding, which is the detail that separates a carefully mapped weave from a rushed one.
A Warm Beige, Gold and Coral Palette
Nearly everything here lives in the warm neutral range. The ground is a sand beige that shifts toward honey gold through the center of the field and back toward cream near the borders, a gentle gradation from hand-spun yarn rather than any change in design. On top of it the flowers run coral and salmon, with small points of true brick red in the quatrefoils and bird motifs for contrast, while camel and cinnamon brown carry the vine lines and the leaf shading. The main border sits a shade lighter than the field, almost ivory, so the brown outer stripe does the work of containing the whole rug. A soft sage green appears only in scattered leaves and is the single cool note in the piece. The fringe and selvedge are undyed ivory. Seen from the pile direction the whole rug reads peach and gold; from the opposite direction it cools to pale beige and ivory, so it will meet both warm and cool furnishings halfway.
Woven in Peshawar, Pakistan
Peshawar, in the northwest of Pakistan, has become one of the most capable weaving centers in the world for large hand-knotted work in the Zigler family of designs, and Chobi takes its name from the wood and bark tones the natural dyes produce. The wool is hand-spun rather than machine-spun, which is exactly why the field breathes rather than sitting flat, and the double knot on a cotton warp gives the rug the body you can see where it rolls in the pile photographs. This is honest village and workshop collaboration: a drawn map, natural dyes, and a weave count high enough to hold the curve of a vine without breaking it into steps. If you are weighing how a piece like this compares with other hand-knotted work, our guide on Persian rugs vs Oriental rugs explains where each tradition sits, and the wider selection of hand-knotted Oriental rugs shows how this palette behaves alongside darker weaves.
