8'1" x 10' Chobi Peshawar Rug | Ziegler All-Over Design | Natural Undyed Wool, Brand New

This is the quiet end of the hand-knotted world: a brand new Chobi Peshawar in undyed and lightly washed wool, drawn in the Ziglar idiom and finished at a low 1/4" pile so the pattern reads as tone rather than contrast. Nothing about it is loud, and that is the point. The whole field sits in a band of ivory, sand and camel, with the vine work emerging only when the light crosses it, which is exactly why this piece works under furniture and across open floors where a strong medallion would fight the room. It is a true Oriental rug, knot by knot on a cotton foundation, and it lands in one of the most useful proportions we stock, so compare it against our other 8x10 hand-knotted rugs before you decide. Every rug we ship travels with a certificate of authenticity recording its size, materials, weave and origin.

Design and Motifs

The field carries an all-over Ziglar layout with no medallion at all: large lobed palmettes linked by thick scrolling vines, each turn of the vine punctuated by an 8 petal rosette or a serrated leaf. The repeat is generous and deliberately loose, so the eye travels across the rug instead of settling in one place, and the drawing is slightly rounded rather than crisp, which is the signature of this style. Two narrow guard stripes of running geometric links frame a wide main border of upright floral sprays and elongated boteh forms, visible clearly in the border close-ups. At the 4 corners the border turns without forcing the pattern, and the weaver has let small irregularities stand, which is normal and desirable in a piece drawn from memory rather than a printed cartoon. The low pile keeps every outline shallow and soft, so the design behaves almost like a watermark in the wool.

A Palette Built From Undyed Wool

The ground is the natural color of the fleece, a warm oatmeal that shifts between pale ivory and light taupe depending on which way the pile is brushed. Over that, the vines and palmettes are worked in honey gold and pale apricot camel, with a few deeper caramel accents where the yarn took more color, and a faint cool grey-blue haze runs through parts of the field where slightly different fleece lots were used. That subtle striation, visible in the full overhead photograph, is abrash: natural variation from hand-spun wool, not a flaw and not fading. The border sits a shade lighter than the field, closer to cream, and the guard stripes pick up the same soft gold as the vine work. The result is a genuinely neutral rug that still has depth, and it sits comfortably with white oak, warm greys, linen upholstery and brass.

Woven in Peshawar

Peshawar, in northwestern Pakistan, became the center for Chobi and Ziglar weaving because the workshops there combined highly skilled looms with hand-spun wool and soft plant-based dye recipes, then finished the pieces with a gentle wash that mutes the palette from the first day. Chobi simply means wood, a reference to those muted natural tones. The back of this rug, shown folded in the detail images, is clean and even, with tightly packed rows over an ivory cotton warp and a hand-finished selvage and fringe. The knot count is consistent from end to end, the sides are straight, and the 1/4" clip gives you a rug that lies flat immediately, takes chair legs and traffic well, and cleans easily. New, unused, and built for decades of daily service rather than for a display wall.

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
