A genuine square at 13'6" x 13'8", this brand new Chobi Peshawar piece answers a problem most rooms in the standard catalog cannot solve: a wide, near equal sided floor that a rectangle simply leaves awkward. The field is a warm sand beige that pulls toward honey gold under light, drawn with an open all over pattern of palmettes, rosettes and leafy vines in pale sage, camel and cream, with occasional flickers of madder red no bigger than a fingertip. The wool is hand spun and the dye work is deliberately low in contrast, so at 162" across the surface reads as one calm, luminous plane rather than a busy design. Among oversize square area rugs this is the size that gets asked for most and found least. It has never been on a floor, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is classic Ziegler: a village style all over repeat, enlarged and spaced out so the motifs breathe instead of crowding one another. Broad crescent palmettes sit on a slow moving vine, each one shaded from cream into sage and outlined here and there with a thin madder red line, as the close detail photograph shows. Between them float serrated leaves, 8 petal rosettes and small blossoms, some barely a shade darker than the ground. Because the repeat is scaled for a large floor, the pattern never resolves into a single focal point, which is exactly what you want on a square: there is no medallion fighting the geometry of the room. The main border is a wide golden band of alternating palmettes and rosettes joined by a running vine, held between narrow guard stripes of small angular florets, and the 4 corners are resolved cleanly rather than cut off mid motif, a detail that separates careful weaving from production work.

A Beige, Gold and Sage Green Palette

Color is the whole argument for this rug. The ground is a soft sand beige with a golden cast, closer to unbleached wheat than to ivory, and it lightens or deepens by a full tone depending on where you stand. The vines and leaves are a dusty sage green, grayed rather than fresh, and the palmettes carry camel, tan and pale cream that sit only a step or two away from the field. The border runs slightly warmer and deeper than the center, a soft antique gold that frames the field without drawing a hard line around it. The only saturated color anywhere is a scattering of madder red outlines and tiny blossoms, and they work precisely because there are so few of them. This is a palette that sits under oak, walnut, linen, brass and off white plaster without demanding anything, and it flatters both warm and cool furnishings, which is rare in a rug this large.

Woven in Peshawar, Pakistan

Peshawar in northwest Pakistan is today one of the strongest centers for hand-knotted work of this kind, and Chobi production there is built around two things: hand spun wool and natural, plant based dye. Hand spun yarn takes dye unevenly by nature, which is why the field breathes instead of sitting flat like machine spun yarn, and the finished rug is then washed to soften the tones into the muted register you see here. The weave itself is even and tightly beaten over a cotton foundation, the pile is clipped medium low so the drawing stays legible, and the back shown in the fold photograph reads clear and regular line by line, with hand tied ivory fringe finishing both ends. A hand-knotted Oriental rug at 13'6" x 13'8" represents many months on the loom for a team of weavers, and a square of this scale is a special order shape that is rarely woven on speculation.
