Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field carries a classic all over floral design, a lattice of thin scrolling vines that links large lobed palmettes, 8 petal rosettes and serrated leaf forms in a repeat that runs corner to corner. Look closely at the field detail and you will see the weaver alternating two scales of flower head: a wide cartouche-shaped palmette flanked by curling tendrils, and a smaller star rosette set on the vine junctions. The main border is a broad turtle-and-vine band of arched leaves and blossoms, framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of boxed rosettes and reciprocal hooks, and then a final outer stripe of tiny meandering flowers. Because the outlines are drawn in a slightly darker camel rather than black or navy, the whole pattern sits inside the field instead of cutting across it, which is exactly why this style works so well under furniture.

A Study in Soft Beige, Sage and Faded Apricot

Woven in Peshawar in the Ziegler Tradition

Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant and vegetable dyes these weavers use, and Peshawar in northwest Pakistan is the town that built its reputation on them. The looms there revived the open, softly colored Ziegler and Company drawings of the late 19th century, work originally made for Western drawing rooms, and they weave it with local hand-spun wool that has real lanolin left in it.
