8' x 9'9" Ziegler Chobi Oriental Rug | Tone on Tone Beige All Over Floral | Brand New
This 8' x 9'9" Chobi is the quiet end of the hand-knotted market: a brand new, never used wool rug woven in the Ziegler manner, where the drawing is fully there but held one tone away from the ground so the whole surface reads as a single warm sand. The pile is a short 1/4", handspun wool on a cotton foundation, which is why the pattern reads more as texture than as contrast. Laid out flat in image 2 it covers an 8 by 10 footprint cleanly, and it is light enough for one person to shift. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity, and this one still has its original dealer tag, visible in the final photograph.
Design and Motifs
The field carries a classic all over design: a loose lattice of curving vines that opens into broad palmettes, split serrated leaves and 8 petal rosettes, with no central medallion and no spandrels to interrupt it. Image 9 catches one of those rosettes head on, a flat open bloom with its petals drawn in a shade barely darker than the ground. The border is narrow for a rug this size, a single meandering vine band flanked by thin guard stripes, drawn in the same soft gold as the field so the rug does not frame itself hard at the edges. Because the repeat runs off the ends rather than resolving neatly in the corners, the pattern feels unforced, closer to a village drawing than a workshop blueprint, and it lets furniture sit anywhere on the rug without burying a focal point.
Color
The ground is a warm sand beige that shifts between wheat gold and pale oatmeal depending on which way the light crosses the pile, clearly visible in the angled shots. The motifs are picked out in ivory and bone, a half step lighter than the field, while the vine outlines and a few of the leaf shapes drop into soft taupe and pale camel, with the faintest warm apricot showing where the dye pooled on a single knot row. Horizontal bands of abrash run across the field, the natural variation of small hand-dyed wool batches rather than any kind of fading, and they are what keeps so pale a rug from looking printed. There is no black, no navy and no strong red anywhere in it, which makes this one of the easiest beige and ivory rugs to place against white walls, oak floors, grey tile or linen upholstery.
Origin and Weaving Quality
Chobi rugs like this are woven around Peshawar in northern Pakistan, the region that has built its reputation on reviving 19th century Ziegler workshop drawings in handspun, vegetable dyed wool. Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant and wood based dyes that give the palette its muted warmth from the loom rather than from a chemical wash. The back images show what you want from this weave: straight, tightly packed knot rows, an even cotton warp with no buckling, flat selvages and hand-tied fringe left clean at both ends. That consistency across a 96" width is the mark of a competent loom, and it is why a well made Pakistani Oriental rug of this type holds its shape under furniture for decades. If you are comparing it against other 8x10 Oriental rugs, the short pile and pale ground make this the version that disappears into a room instead of commanding it.
