8'2" x 9'9" Chobi Peshawar Rug | Ziegler All-Over Floral | Brown & Ivory | Brand New

This 8'2" x 9'9" Chobi Peshawar is a contemporary hand-knotted piece in the Ziegler idiom, woven in Pakistan from hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation. The field is a deep walnut brown, uncommon as a ground color and the reason this one reads so differently from the usual ivory and gold Chobi production, and it is framed by a wide pale beige and ivory border. The pile is cropped to 5/16 of an inch, so the drawing stays crisp and the rug sits flat without bulk under furniture. At just over 8 by 10 it suits the same footprint as most 8x10 Oriental rugs, and it has never been used. Every rug we ship carries our certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field carries an all-over floral lattice built on a thin vine that loops the full length of the rug, with 2 large open rosettes set side by side at the center, shield-shaped palmettes rising on the vertical axis above and below them, and broad serrated leaves turning out from every junction. Small 8 petal star flowers fill the gaps between the vines, which keeps the brown ground active rather than empty. The main border runs an alternating sequence of a spiky ivory rosette and a cluster of leaf sprays, with dark brown outlines giving the only hard contrast anywhere on the rug. Thin guard stripes on both sides of it repeat a tiny hook and bud device, and the 4 corners are resolved by hand rather than mirrored mechanically, so the corner flowers are each drawn slightly differently. The selvedge is finished in dark brown and the ends are plain ivory fringe.

A Walnut Brown Field Framed in Beige and Ivory

The ground is a muted chocolate to walnut brown that shifts in horizontal striations as the hand-spun wool takes dye unevenly, lighter toward the middle of the field in the overhead photo and deeper along the edges. Against it the florals read in cream and bone ivory, warm sand beige, and a pale straw gold on the larger leaves. Look closely at the rosette centers and you find small notes of soft terracotta and a muted rust, plus a cool pale blue and a gentle sage green scattered through the smaller buds, which is what keeps the palette from going flat. The border is the lightest area of the rug, a chalky beige that lifts toward ivory at the outer guard stripe, and the dark brown drawing inside it ties back to the field. The whole thing sits firmly in the neutral range, which makes it easy to place, and if you are working a darker scheme it belongs with the rest of our brown Oriental rugs.

Peshawar Weaving and the Chobi Ziegler Tradition

Chobi rugs are woven in and around Peshawar in northern Pakistan, where the workshops built their reputation on hand-spun wool, natural dye recipes and a deliberately softened finish. The Ziegler drawing they use, large-scale all-over florals with generous open ground, comes out of the 19th century European commissioned workshop designs and was adopted here because it suits that soft palette better than a tight court pattern would. The weave on this piece is even and the knotting regular across the full width, which you can see where the straight lines of the border guard stripes hold true from one end to the other, and the low 5/16 inch clip is what lets the fine vine work stay legible. This is the kind of hand-knotted Oriental rug that gets quietly better with traffic, since the hand-spun wool burnishes rather than matting down.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
