6' x 9' Chobi Ziegler Oriental Rug | All Over Floral Vine Design | Natural Wool, Brand New

This 6' x 9' Chobi Ziegler is a brand new hand-knotted piece, woven on a cotton foundation with a pile of hand spun natural wool that still has the slightly uneven, hand carded look that machine processed yarn never gets. There is no medallion. The whole field is given over to an all over floral vine drawing, so the rug reads the same from any side of the room and can be rotated for even wear without upsetting the composition. At 72" x 108" it covers roughly 54 square feet, which puts it squarely in the practical 6x9 Oriental rugs range that fits a sofa and two chairs or a four seat table. It ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, the wool pile and the origin.

Design and Motifs

The field is laid out on a lattice of thin scrolling vines that link large 8 petal rosettes, open blossoms and long serrated leaves, with pairs of broad curling cloud leaves set along the center line like loose hooks. Nothing is crowded. The weaver left real breathing room between the elements, which is the character of the Ziegler drawing and the reason these rugs sit so quietly under furniture. The main border carries a run of palmette cartouches and small spade shaped blossoms outlined in red, separated by a wide ivory ground, and it is fenced on both sides by narrow stripes of vine and bud. The corners resolve cleanly, with the border pattern turning rather than being cut off, which tells you the cartoon was drawn properly for this size and not simply stopped at the edge.

Color: Muted Rust, Ivory and Soft Sage

The field is a muted rust brown with a mauve cast, closer to dried terracotta or old brick than to a bright red, and it moves slightly from one end to the other in soft abrash bands where the dye lots changed. Against it the ornament is drawn in ivory, wheat beige and a warm antique gold, with the larger palmettes taking the deepest gold and the vines fading into pale cream. Soft sage and powder green appear in the leaf tips and in the guard stripes, cooling the whole palette down, and tiny flecks of true red mark the centers of the rosettes and the outlines of the border blossoms, giving the eye something to catch on. The wide border reads as a light sand beige that lifts the darker field, and the outer selvedge returns to the rust tone to close the frame. Overall it is a neutral, low contrast rug that works with oak floors, linen upholstery and warm white walls.

Chobi Weaving in Peshawar, Pakistan

Chobi, from the word for wood, refers to the natural dyestuffs these weavers work with, and the Peshawar workshops of northwest Pakistan have built a serious reputation for them over the last few decades. The wool is hand spun before dyeing, so it takes color unevenly on purpose, and the finished rug is given a gentle wash that softens the tones into the faded, lived in look you see here. Knotting is done on vertical looms by weavers working from a cartoon, with a medium pile left long enough to feel soft underfoot but short enough to keep the fine vine work legible, as the folded corner and rolled edge photos show. If you are weighing this against other weaving traditions, our guide to what separates a Persian rug from an Oriental rug explains where pieces like this one sit. For the money, a well drawn Chobi Ziegler in this condition is one of the best values in hand-knotted work today.
