7'11" x 9'11" Ziegler Oriental Rug | Neutral Beige All-Over Floral | Hand-Knotted Wool, Brand New
This is the quiet end of the hand-knotted world: a brand new Ziegler woven in Pakistan, 7'11" x 9'11", with a sand beige field, a low 1/4" wool pile and a drawing so softly shaded that you read the pattern slowly rather than all at once. It is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, knot by knot on a cotton foundation, and the back shown in the photographs tells you that immediately: even rows, clean selvages, hand-finished fringe. At just under 8 feet by 10 feet it sits squarely in the most usable of all room sizes, which is why buyers searching 8x10 rugs keep coming back to this format. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity recording size, material, weave and origin.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The first overhead photograph reads warmer and a shade darker than the rug actually is, because of the lighting used for the full-length shot. The true tone is the soft sand beige you see in the floor photographs and the close-up field details, where the ivory and pale grey-blue shading in the pattern is visible. Nothing here is wear, fade or damage, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.
Design and Motifs
The field carries a classic all-over floral design rather than a central medallion: a loose lattice of thin vines that travels corner to corner, carrying large stepped palmettes, 8 petal rosettes and long serrated leaves. Because the vine repeats without a focal point, the rug reads as pattern and texture from across the room and only resolves into individual flowers when you stand over it, which is exactly how the close-up photographs behave. The main border is drawn as a continuous meander, with a broad palmette and curling leaf repeat set between two narrow guard stripes, and the 4 corners are resolved cleanly so the vine turns without breaking. Small spots of hand drawing are visible throughout, including slight variation in the size of the rosettes and the angle of the leaf tips, the honest evidence of a weaver working from a cartoon rather than a machine repeating a file.
The Neutral Color Palette
The ground is a soft sand beige that shifts between oatmeal and pale wheat depending on where you stand, the result of hand-spun wool taking dye unevenly and the pile catching light in one direction and absorbing it in the other. Over that ground the vines and palmettes are drawn in slightly deeper tones of camel and light brown, with ivory used for the highlights inside the flower heads so the pattern lifts without contrast. Running through the field is a faint cool grey, almost grey-blue in the detail photographs, which keeps the whole palette from going too golden and makes the rug sit comfortably next to grey stone, white oak or warm plaster walls. The border is a shade warmer than the field, a honey beige that frames the rug softly instead of outlining it, and the narrow guard stripes pick up the same pale grey. For rooms built on beige and ivory rugs, this is a tonal piece that adds pattern without adding color pressure.
Ziegler Weaving in Pakistan
The Ziegler name comes from the European trading house that commissioned large decorative rugs for Western drawing rooms in the 1880s, softening the old drawing and lightening the palette for European interiors. That design language is now woven mainly in Pakistan, where workshops around Lahore and Peshawar hand-spin the wool, dye in small lots and wash the finished rug to settle the colors, and Pakistan has become the home of this style for a simple reason: the weaving is consistently good and the wool is excellent. This piece shows that work plainly. The pile is clipped low at 1/4", which is what lets the fine vine drawing stay legible, and the knotting is tight and even across the full 95" width with no pull or waviness along the sides. The cotton foundation is firm, the selvages are wrapped by hand and the ends are finished with a short plain fringe, so the rug lies flat and will take furniture and traffic for decades.
