13'6" x 15'10" Chobi Ziegler Oriental Rug | Olive Green All Over Floral | Hand-Knotted Wool, Brand New

Nearly square at 13'6" x 15'10", this is a room-filling Chobi Peshawar piece built for a great room, a wide formal living room or an open-plan space where a standard 12x18 would leave the proportions wrong. The field is a quiet olive green that shifts toward sage in daylight, and the drawing across it is drawn loosely and generously in cream, gold and soft taupe, the way the best Ziegler-style weavings are. Hand-knotted on a cotton foundation with a 5/16" hand-spun wool pile, it has the low sheen and slight color movement that only naturally dyed, hand-spun yarn gives you. Among oversize Oriental rugs this squarish format is genuinely hard to find, and this one is brand new and never used. It ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic Ziegler composition: large shield-shaped palmettes, open lotus heads and 8 petal rosettes strung along slow, sweeping vine work that runs edge to edge with no central medallion. The scale of the drawing is the point here. Each palmette is big enough to read from across the room, and the curling acanthus leaves between them are left half open, so the green ground shows through and keeps the pattern from feeling crowded. Small terracotta outlines appear here and there around a leaf tip or a flower head, tiny red accents that give the muted palette a pulse. The ivory main border repeats a palmette and rosette rhythm framed by two narrow guard stripes, and the 4 corners are resolved cleanly rather than cut off mid-motif, which tells you the cartoon was drawn properly for this exact size. Olive Green, Ivory and the Softened Palette

The ground is an olive green with a grey cast, closer to sage under a window and deeper, almost moss, under lamplight. It is not a flat color: the hand-spun wool takes dye unevenly by nature, so fine horizontal striations run through the field and give it depth instead of a printed look. Against that, the motifs are worked in warm ivory, wheat gold, pale butter yellow and a soft mushroom taupe, with occasional blue-grey leaves picking up the tone of the outer edge, which finishes in a slate green-grey selvage. The border is a gold-washed ivory, warmer than the field, so the frame reads as light and the center reads as cool. Restrained red outlining at a handful of flower heads is the only saturated note in the entire rug. For rooms built around greens, creams and natural wood, this sits in the same family as our other green area rugs, but with a softer, more faded finish.

Peshawar Weaving and Chobi Quality

Peshawar in northwest Pakistan is where the Chobi tradition is centered. Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant and vegetable dye-stuffs these weavers work with, and the pieces are woven from hand-spun highland wool rather than machine-spun yarn, then given a gentle wash that softens the colors to the mellow tone you see here. The Ziegler style itself goes back to the 19th century trading house that commissioned open, large-scale floral designs for European and American houses, and Peshawar workshops have kept that drawing alive better than anyone. The back photograph shows an even, tight knot line across the full 13'6" width, with no pull or waisting, which is a real achievement on a loom this wide. It is a genuinely good Oriental rug: handmade, naturally dyed, and heavy enough to lie dead flat the moment it is rolled out.
