2'4" x 19'3" Chobi Ziegler Runner Rug | Hand-Knotted Natural Wool | All-Over Floral | Brand New

Runners this long are not easy to find. This piece measures 2'4" x 19'3", which is just over 19 feet from fringe to fringe and only 28 inches across, hand-knotted in Afghanistan from hand-spun natural wool on a cotton foundation. It is brand new and has never been on a floor, with full even pile, straight selvedges and clean ivory fringe at both ends. A single continuous weaving of this length is the practical answer for a deep long hallway runner where two short rugs butted together would always look like two rugs. As a hand-knotted Oriental rug it ships with a certificate of authenticity listing its size, materials and origin.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The two full-length photographs were shot under different lighting, so one reads cooler and greyer than the other. The truer color is the warm brown and soft gold seen in the two close-up images. Nothing in the photographs is wear, fading or damage, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our Freeport warehouse.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic Ziegler all-over floral drawing with no central medallion, which is exactly what a narrow 19 foot run needs: the repeat simply continues, so the rug reads the same whether you see 6 feet of it or the whole length. Down the center runs a column of large open palmettes and 8 petal rosettes, each one outlined in rust and filled with soft gold, linked by a thin vine that throws off serrated leaves and small buds toward the sides. The scale is generous and the spacing airy, with plenty of ground showing between motifs, which keeps a narrow runner from looking busy. The main border is drawn in ivory and holds alternating palmettes and reciprocal leaf forms, framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of running vine. Corners are resolved cleanly, with the border pattern turning rather than being cut off, a detail visible in the fringe-end close-up.

Color: Warm Brown, Soft Gold and Rust

The ground is a neutral warm brown that shifts between taupe and mushroom depending on the light and on which direction the pile is laid, the kind of quiet tone that sits comfortably against oak, walnut or pale stone floors. Over that ground the florals are worked in soft gold and honey, with abrash banding that lightens and deepens gradually along the length and gives the long run its movement. The outlines are rust, a dry brick red rather than a bright one, and they do all the drawing work: every palmette, rosette and leaf stem is traced in that single accent so the pattern stays legible without adding a second strong color. Brown and camel tones fill the leaves, and the ivory border provides the only real contrast, lifting the edges and reading almost cream next to the field. The total palette is restrained, closer to a brown and neutral rug than to anything saturated, which is why pieces like this work in rooms where the walls and furniture are already doing the talking.

Woven in Afghanistan: The Chobi Peshawar Weave

Chobi Ziegler rugs come from Afghan workshops whose weavers work in the Peshawar finishing tradition, and the group is known for two things: hand-spun wool and natural dyestuffs, which together produce the soft, slightly uneven color this runner shows. Hand-spun yarn takes dye unevenly by nature, so the banding across the width is a sign of how the wool was prepared rather than a flaw. The wool itself is dense and springy with a quiet luster, and the pile has been clipped fairly low, which suits a traffic piece and keeps the fine outlining crisp. The weave is even and regular throughout the 19'3" length, with the knot rows running straight and the two long sides staying parallel, which is harder to achieve than it sounds on a loom set this narrow and warped this long. Selvedges are wrapped tight and the ends are secured with a firm kilim band before the fringe, so the rug is ready for a hallway, a galley kitchen or a long upstairs landing.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
