8'11" x 11'9" Ziegler Chobi Rug | Hand-Knotted Natural Wool | Dark Brown All Over Floral | New

Dark brown grounds are rare in hand-knotted work, and this 8'11" x 11'9" Ziegler Chobi is the reason weavers keep attempting them. The field reads almost black-brown in low light and warms to a deep coffee tone in daylight, and against it the beige and gold flowerheads sit forward the way pale drawing does on a dark ground. It is a brand new piece, never used, hand-knotted in natural wool on a cotton foundation, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity. As a genuine hand-woven Oriental rug, every knot here was tied by hand, and the back photograph shows the even, disciplined knotting behind the front face.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion. This is a true all over floral design, built from big open palmettes, serrated lotus heads, small 8 petal rosettes and broad lobed leaves, all carried on a scrolling vine that runs corner to corner without a break. The drawing is generous rather than crowded, which is what separates a good Ziegler from a busy one: each flowerhead has room around it, and the vine loops through the dark ground like ironwork. Along the vertical axis the weaver set a column of stepped star cartouches, giving the field a quiet center line without committing to a medallion. The main border is a wide beige band of rotating palmettes and curling cloud leaves, framed by gold guard stripes stamped with tiny brown clover rosettes and finished with a dark brown outer band. The 4 corners resolve cleanly, a good test of cartoon discipline on a rug of this width.

The Chocolate Brown Field and Its Beige and Gold Drawing

The palette stays inside a single warm family, which is why this rug works in rooms where stronger colors would fight the furniture. The ground is a saturated dark chocolate brown, deep enough to act as a neutral anchor. Over it, the florals run through a graded range of beige tones: bone and oatmeal at the lightest, then wheat, camel, soft apricot and a burnished gold in the larger palmettes, with faint tan shading inside the petals that gives each flowerhead depth instead of a flat silhouette. The border shifts the balance, pale beige for the wide band and warm gold for the guard stripes, so the frame lifts and the field recedes. The natural wool has a genuine sheen, visible in the close-up of the pile, and the color moves slightly as you walk around the rug, which is normal in hand-spun wool and part of what makes brown rugs of this type so forgiving in daily use.

Woven in Pakistan: The Peshawar Ziegler Chobi Weave

Peshawar in northwest Pakistan is where the Ziegler Chobi style is woven today, and the best of that output is serious work: hand-spun wool, hand-knotted on a cotton foundation, with the pile clipped medium so the drawing stays crisp. Chobi refers to the softened, sun-mellowed color range these weavers are known for, and it is exactly what you see in the beige and gold tones here. The knotting is even across the full 141" length, the selvedges are tight and the cotton fringe is original and unshortened. At 8'11" x 11'9" this sits in the standard 9x12 rug footprint, the size most often specified for a full seating group or a long dining table, and being brand new it has its entire service life ahead of it.
