8'11" x 11'6" Ziegler Chobi Rug | Beige & Sage All-Over Floral | New Hand-Knotted Wool

This 8'11" x 11'6" Ziegler Chobi is a brand new, never used piece that sits squarely in the 9x12 area rug range, which is the size most buyers need for a full seating group or a large dining table. It is hand-knotted in Pakistan from handspun, plant-dyed wool on a cotton foundation, finished with the soft antique-style wash that gives Chobi weaving its faded, already-lived-in look while the pile is still full and the drawing still crisp. The back photographs show a tight, even knot across the whole width, with no sag, no crease and straight selvages. As with every piece we import, it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug and not a machine-made reproduction.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field carries a true all-over design, built from large open palmettes, 8 petal rosettes with dark centers, fan-shaped acanthus leaves and long serrated leaves, all joined by a thin vine that curves through the ground rather than filling it. The spacing is the point: the Ziegler drawing style leaves real breathing room between motifs, so the pattern reads calm from standing height and only shows its detail when you look down close, as in the field photographs. The main border runs a repeating cream and camel palmette flanked by leaf sprays, framed on both sides by narrow minor borders of tulip buds and dots, and a fine burgundy outline separates each band. Every motif is drawn with a deep burgundy contour line, which is what keeps a low-contrast rug from going flat.

A Neutral Beige Field with Sage, Rust and Burgundy

The ground is a warm golden beige that lifts toward ivory in the upper field and settles into soft camel near the borders, a gentle abrash that comes from handspun wool taking plant dye unevenly, not from wear. Sage green appears in the leaves, in the shading of the border palmettes and in the small bud motifs of the guard stripes, cooling the gold just enough to keep the rug from reading yellow. Soft salmon and apricot carry the flower heads, while deep burgundy does the outlining and fills a few rosette centers, giving the surface its only strong accent. It is a quiet, low-contrast palette that belongs with beige and ivory rugs, pale oak floors, linen upholstery and warm white walls, and it hides traffic far better than a plain cream broadloom would.

Ziegler Chobi Weaving in Pakistan

Chobi means wood, a reference to the walnut husk, pomegranate rind, madder and indigo used to color the yarn, and the Ziegler name comes from the 19th century workshop designs that these weavers still work from. Pakistan, and the Lahore and Peshawar workshops in particular, is where this style is woven best today: handspun wool with a long staple, a cotton warp and weft, and a knot count that stays consistent from the first row to the last across nearly 12 feet of length. The pile is cut at a medium height, dense underfoot and springy, the kind of weave that takes dining chairs and daily traffic without crushing. Hand-knotted work at this scale takes a team months on the loom, and the straight sides and square corners visible in the full-length photographs are the clearest evidence of a well-run workshop.
