Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field carries a classic all-over floral repeat built on a lattice of leafy vine scrolls that travel corner to corner, punctuated by large open palmettes, 8 petal rosettes and small cross shaped blossoms scattered between them. The palmettes alternate in scale: broad shield shaped blooms outlined in rust along the vertical axis, softer ivory and gold rosettes filling the intervals, and long serrated leaves curving away from each junction. The main border repeats a turtle palmette and leaf sequence against an ivory ground, with each palmette centered by a small rust cartouche, and it is flanked by two narrow guard stripes of running vine. The corners resolve cleanly, which is a sign the weaver followed the cartoon properly rather than crowding the pattern at the ends. Seen from the side, as in the raking light photographs, the drawing reads almost as a low relief because the pile height is so uniform.
