9'9" x 13'4" Chobi Peshawar Ziegler Rug | Beige & Sage All-Over Floral | Hand-Knotted Natural Wool
This is a new, never used Chobi Peshawar in the Ziegler manner, hand-knotted in natural wool on a cotton foundation and finished at a generous 10x13 room size. The drawing is soft and open rather than busy, the wool has the low sheen you only get from good handspun yarn, and the whole piece reads as one quiet field of gold and beige from across a room. It is a genuinely versatile Oriental rug for buyers who want handmade weaving without a strong colour statement. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is 100% hand-knotted.
Please Note About the Photographs:
A few faint diagonal lines and shadows appear across the field in the overhead photographs. These are fold and roll marks from pallet storage, not wear, fade or damage. They relax once the rug is laid flat, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.
Design and Motifs
The field carries a classic Ziegler all-over pattern: large lobed palmettes set on a slow, wandering vine, with serrated acanthus leaves, 8 petal rosettes and small star flowers filling the spaces between. There is no central medallion. Instead the palmettes repeat down the length in a loose column, each one outlined in rust brown with a pale sage heart, so the eye moves across the rug rather than stopping in the middle. Corner spandrels are only lightly suggested, which keeps the field reading as one continuous surface. The main border is wide and confident, drawn with alternating cartouche shaped palmettes and curling leaf forms, framed by two narrow guard stripes of rosettes and running vine. Detail shots show how relaxed the drawing is: lines wobble slightly by hand, motifs are not mechanically identical, and small rust red dots punctuate the guard stripes at regular intervals.
A Palette of Beige, Gold and Sage Green
The ground is a warm golden beige that shifts between sand and pale honey depending on where you stand, a result of abrash in the handspun wool rather than any single flat dye. Over that ground the ornament is worked in muted tones: soft cocoa brown for the vine and leaf outlines, a dusty sage green in the palmette centres and leaf tips, and a pale ivory that lifts the smaller rosettes off the field. Rust red appears sparingly, as thin outlines around the palmette hearts and as tiny square flower heads in the borders, and those few warm accents are what keep the palette from going flat. The border sits a shade deeper and more golden than the field, giving the rug a visible frame without introducing a contrasting colour. It is a neutral rug in the useful sense: it will sit under existing furniture, take daylight well and never fight a room.
Peshawar Weaving and the Ziegler Tradition
Chobi Peshawar rugs come from the weaving workshops around Peshawar in northern Pakistan, where the Ziegler style of large scale, softly coloured all-over florals has been refined for decades. Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant and wood based dye recipes that produce these muted golds, greens and browns instead of hard synthetic tones. The weave here is even and dense enough to hold fine detail in the palmette outlines, the back shows a clean, regular knot with no distortion, the selvages are tightly overcast and the fringe is hand-tied from the cotton warps. The pile is clipped at a medium height, which is the right choice for a rug this size: enough body to feel substantial underfoot, short enough that the drawing stays crisp. Made in Pakistan, brand new, and never laid in a home.
