8'11" x 11'8" Chobi Ziegler Rug | Slate Grey Field, Gold All-Over Floral | Natural Wool, Brand New

This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted Chobi Ziegler in a quiet slate grey and gold palette, and at 8'11" x 11'8" it sits right in the most useful of the 9x12 Oriental rug sizes for a full seating group or a dining table with chairs pulled back. The pile is natural wool on a cotton foundation, cut at a medium height that still shows the drawing clearly, and the handle is supple rather than stiff. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece, and if you want the background on how this category differs from court weaving, our guide on Persian rugs vs Oriental rugs explains it plainly.

Please Note About the Photographs:

This rug was photographed under several different light sources, so the field reads slightly warmer and darker in the first studio image and cooler and lighter in the floor shots. That is lighting, not two different colors and not fading. The close-up detail photographs are the most accurate record of the actual slate grey, gold and soft rust tones.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field carries an all-over floral design built from large crowned palmettes set on a vertical axis, linked by thin curving vines that throw off broad serrated leaves, small star rosettes and little paired buds. The palmettes repeat 4 times down the length of the field with half motifs breaking at the edges, which is what gives a Ziegler drawing its calm, continuous, almost wallpaper-like rhythm instead of a single focal point. A narrow inner guard stripe frames the field, then a wide beige main border carries a chain of hexagonal rosettes outlined in rust and separated by angular leaf sprays, and a second thin guard stripe in a reciprocal pattern finishes the edge. The corners resolve cleanly, with each rosette landing where the border turns, and the side selvages and short ivory fringe are tidy and intact.

Slate Grey, Gold and a Whisper of Rust

The field is a soft slate grey that is not flat: the wool carries fine horizontal variation, a natural abrash that moves between a warm taupe grey and a cooler pale grey as the light crosses it, which is exactly what you want in a large neutral floor. Over that, the florals are drawn in old gold, honey and pale ivory, warm enough to stop the grey from reading cold. The wide border steps up into a creamy beige with a buttery gold cast, and the only true accent color is a soft rust, used sparingly on the rosette outlines and in the tiny crowns at the top of each palmette, with a few whispers of pale celadon and blue-grey in the guard stripes. It is a restrained scheme that works with charcoal, walnut, white oak and almost any upholstery, and it belongs with the quieter grey and charcoal rugs rather than anything bright.

Made in Pakistan: Chobi Ziegler Weaving

Chobi Ziegler rugs are hand-knotted in Pakistan, and the workshops there have become the main source for this muted, decorative style of contemporary hand-knotted work. The weave is a single wefted knot on a cotton warp, and the back photograph shows an even, regular grid with no pulled rows or puckering across nearly 12 feet of length, which is the practical test of a well-tensioned loom at this size. Pile density is good and the wool is springy under the hand, chosen for a long staple that holds a clipped surface and takes a soft, low-contrast dye range rather than sharp saturated color. This is honest village-tradition workmanship in the Ziegler manner: no silk, no inflated knot-count claims, just durable natural wool, clean drawing and a palette built to live under daylight for decades.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
